Disney: 10 Upcoming Live-Action Movies

Disney’s animated movies may hog the limelight, but Mickey Mouse has quite a few exciting live-action films in the works.

Walt Disney Pictures has been busy creating new content to premiere in theaters and on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. While some of the company’s latest films will be released in just a couple of weeks, others won’t hit the screens until 2021 and beyond. We’re here to look at both the quickly approaching movies and the ones that are still waiting on a release date. More specifically, we’re narrowing in on Disney’s upcoming live-action films.

From retellings of Disney’s classic animations to film adaptions of beloved children’s books, we’re excited for all the stories Disney is setting out to tell. Here are a handful of the upcoming live-action movies the company is soon to release.

10 Lady And The Tramp

When Disney+ launches on Nov. 12, a live-action version of Lady and the Tramp is being served up alongside it.

This reimagined version of Disney’s 1955 animated classic of the same name tells of the romance between a cocker spaniel who comes from a wealthy family and a Schnauzer who is a stray.

With Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux voicing the titular characters, we’re excited to see all the charm (and that famous spaghetti-eating scene) brought to the screen.

9 Noelle

This fantasy adventure, starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader, is also set to premiere on Nov. 12, the Disney+ launch day.

The Christmas tale has Kris Kringle retiring and handing over his duties to his son, Nick (Hader). However, after Noelle (Kendrick) suggests her brother take some off time, Nick leaves the job completely, which has the preparations falling into Noelle’s hands.

The film was at first scheduled to get a theatrical release, however, in February, Disney decided it would instead make a home for itself online.

8 Mulan

On March 27 of next year, Mulan will be getting a live-action update.

The story tells of a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in the Imperial Chinese Army after her aging father is recruited for the war. While the animated movie shares the same plot as this one, the singing and humor of the original are being replaced with a more serious, dramatic tone.

Actress Liu Yifei will be portraying the titular role, and judging from the trailers, she expertly fades into the heroine.

7 Artemis Fowl

This sci-fi fantasy film is based on the first novel in the beloved Artemis Fowl book series by Eoin Colfer. It tells of a 12-year-old genius from a family of mastermind criminals who is searching for his father after he disappears.

Though the starring child actors are newer to Hollywood, big names like Judi Dench and Josh Gad are part of the cast.

The adventure film debuts on May 29 of next year.

6 Jungle Cruise

Also coming during the summer movie season, on July 24, is the movie based on the iconic Jungle Cruise ride at Disney parks across the world.

Taking place during the early 20th century, the narrative follows a riverboat captain (Dwayne Johnson), a scientist (Emily Blunt), and her younger brother (Jack Whitehall) on a search for the Tree of Life. However, braving the jungle doesn’t come without its challenges, including dangerous animals and a competing crew.

Fans are excited about this one, especially because it has been a long time coming. Plans for a Jungle Cruise film began back in 2006.

5 The One And Only Ivan

This fantasy drama film, based on the kid’s book of the same name, tells of a gorilla, elephant, and dog who live inside of the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. The problem: The gang has no idea how they got there.

Disney announced that it was adapting The One and Only Ivan back in 2014 and has its eyes on an Aug. 14, 2020 release date.

The film is set to star actors including Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, and Bryan Cranston.

4 Cruella

This live-action One Hundred and One Dalmations spin-off tells the story of how Cruella de Vil became a vicious puppy hoarder. This takes place against the backdrop of 1970s London, where Cruella is working as a fashion designer.

Emma Stone is taking on the titular role while Emma Thompson is starring as the new Baroness.

Though you’ll have to wait until May 28, 2021, for the film to hit theaters, we’re hopeful that it will be worth the wait.

3 Secret Society Of Second Born Royals

Headed straight for Disney+ sometime in 2020, this contemporary fantasy follows a rebellious princess named Sam who learns she has superpowers. This has her entering into a secret training program for royals in charge of protecting the world.

15-year-old Peyton Elizabeth Lee is playing Sam while Skylar Astin is set to portray the helpful Professor James Morrow.

Filming for Secret Society of Second Born Royals took place in May and June of this year, so while no firm release date has been set, the wheels are moving in the right direction.

2 Stargirl

This drama film, starring singer Grace VanderWaal as the titular Stargirl Caraway, tells the tale of a quirky teen who enters Mica High School in the tenth grade. While most of her classmates find her strange, Leo quickly falls for her.

While filming took place in New Mexico during 2018, many of the movie’s details are still being held tightly under wraps. That being said, it’s been rumored that the movie will make its debut in 2020. Being that Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl book has been set to get an adaption since 2015, we’re hoping this is true.

1 Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made

Based on the book series of the same name, this upcoming Disney+ film tells the story of an 11-year-old detective who solves crimes alongside his giant imaginary polar bear.

Child actor Winslow Fegley is taking on the titular role while Ophelia Lovibond and Craig Robinson have also been cast.

Like Stargirl, filming took place in 2018, but we’re still waiting on a solid release date. That being said, from the one picture we have, it looks to be adorable.
