Since Frozen was released in 2013, many have discussed the critically acclaimed Disney film as though it were the first to focus on the relationship between sisters with the introduction of Elsa and Anna. But long before that, the 2002 animated Disney film Lilo and Stitch focused on the relationship between siblings Lilo and Nani Pelekai.

These two sisterly relationships are very different in many ways, but also share similarities in the way they fiercely love and protect one another. While Frozen may get more attention than Lilo and Stitch, there are many reasons why Lilo and Nani’s sibling relationship should be seen as just as important – if not more important than – Elsa and Anna’s.

10 Elsa and Anna: Magic and not magic

Though Elsa’s powers are in many ways the very thing that keep her and Anna apart for so long, it’s also clear that they’re one of the many things that make these two sisters complement one another so perfectly.

Elsa’s powers give her strength that she struggles to find in other sources, due to her struggle with her identity, while Anna’s strength of personality and conviction make her powerful in ways that make up for her lack of powers.

9 Lilo and Nani: Ordinary meets extraordinary

Neither Lilo nor Nani may have powers in the way that Elsa does, but their everyday life is certainly upended in extremely fantastical ways with the arrival of Stitch and his fellow aliens.

Unlike many of Disney’s fairytale-focused films, Lilo and Stitch is a film about the ordinary becoming extraordinary. Lilo and Nani are just normal siblings with a large age gap, who find themselves becoming unlikely heroes in the face of the extraterrestrial.

8 Elsa and Anna: Never give up on each other

Elsa and Anna spend much of their formative years separated from one another, due to Elsa’s self-imposed isolation and struggle with her powers.

But even throughout all those years, Anna never stops reaching out to her older sister, as poignantly depicted in the song “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” This tenacity continues in Frozen 2, as Anna repeatedly refuses to let Elsa slip back into her self-isolating tendencies.

7 Lilo and Nani: Selflessness

Nani and Lilo both find themselves living a life they never could have planned for, after the loss of their parents. Nani is left as Lilo’s guardian, a process that doesn’t always go smoothly.

Through her role as Lilo’s guardian and protector, Nani is forced to mature much faster than other people her age, including David. She doesn’t have the luxury of thinking only of her own needs, but instead prioritizes Lilo’s, something that the young Lilo even learns to do with both Nani and Stitch.

6 Elsa and Anna: Always together, even when apart

Though Frozen and Frozen II are primarily about the relationship between the sisters Elsa and Anna, both girls explore their own independent journeys in each film.

Frozen follows Elsa’s journey to accept her powers, and Anna’s journey to find true love, while Frozen 2 explores Elsa’s journey to accept herself, and Anna’s journey to accept the past and future. But all the while, the sisters never give up on each other, and find ways to be there for each other no matter what.

5 Lilo and Nani: Overcome everything

Just as with Elsa and Anna, Lilo and Nani both overcome quite a lot in their young lives, but always stick together no matter what or who tries to get in their way.

Even as aliens threaten their daily lifestyle and destroy almost everything in their Hawaiian paradise, and even after Lilo is temporarily taken captive by them, Lilo and Nani do all that they can to stay together.

4 Elsa and Anna: Acts of true love

It’s traditional for many fairytales to be focused on the idea of true love, which is usually depicted between a man and a woman, or a prince and a princess. But Frozen powerfully challenges that notion, showing that true love can exist between family members as well.

In Frozen, Anna risks her life to save Elsa from Hans, embodying the “act of true love” that thaws Elsa’s “frozen heart.” And in turn, Elsa risks her life to save Anna in Frozen 2, allowing herself to be frozen as she shares the truth about Arendelle with her sister.

3 Lilo and Nani: Growing together

As Nani is tasked with raising Lilo, it’s inevitable to see their relationship not only as siblings, but also as parent and child. But in many senses, that parent-child bond can be applied both ways, as Lilo and Nani both grow and learn from one another.

Through Nani’s guidance, Lilo learns how to take care of Stitch, and to not compromise her self-identity. And through raising Lilo, Nani learns how to be patient, to be protective, and to be kind to herself.

2 Elsa and Anna: A bridge has two sides

Anna and Elsa are perfect opposites of one another in many ways when it comes to their personalities. But Frozen 2 reveals that they also complete one another in being everything their kingdom of Arendelle needs to thrive.

As the metaphorical two sides of the bridge between the world of Arnedelle and the world of the mythic forests, Elsa and Anna are the perfect pair in ruling, and in their relationship with one another.

1 Lilo and Nani: Ohana

At the very heart of Lilo and Stitch is the central theme of ohana. As defined by the film, the term is used to mean family, and that no one gets left behind, or forgotten. Lilo and Nani’s relationship perfectly encapsulates that.

No matter how frustrated they get with each other, and no matter the obstacles that come their way, whether terrestrial or extraterrestrial, Lilo and Nani are always there for each other, and always come back to each other.
