The Star Wars franchise is a core part of Disney+, but not every film in the series is available at launch. Star Wars, which has been a property of Disney since the purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, makes up an important part of the lineup for the streaming service, which is also being bolstered by new content.

Disney officially joins the streaming wars with Disney+, and with a launch lineup of 862 movies and TV shows that’s sure to grow in the coming months and years, the company is already deep in competition with streaming giants Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix; of course, Apple TV+ and HBO Max may climb up and compete directly with these other services as well. Disney+ is packed with content, including films and TV shows from their in-house properties, Marvel Studios, Pixar, the newly-acquired 20th Century Fox, and of course, Lucasfilm.

It’s Lucasfilm properties that factor heavily into Disney+’s appeal, especially since it features original content from the Star Wars universe. Disney+ will become the new home of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars for its seventh season. The series ended in 2014, but is being revived for Disney+. There’s also the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series in development. But Star Wars shows aren’t all that Disney+ has to offer from Lucasfilm.

Stars Wars Films Available On Disney+ At Launch

Disney+ will launch with the first seven installments in the main Star Wars series, in addition to the spinoff film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This means that fans can binge through nearly the whole franchise, and unlike the situation with Disney+’s MCU movies, key installments won’t need to be skipped. So while it’s not complete, it’s a solid lineup.

  • A New Hope (1977)
  • The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  • Return of the Jedi (1983)
  • Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Star Wars Films Not Available On Disney+ At Launch

The two newest releases in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story, are both missing from Disney+. In fact, The Last Jedi is one of the biggest movies absent from Disney+, considering that it raked in $1.321 billion at the worldwide box office. However, both movies are expected to join the platform within a year’s time. The reason for this is because both films are still being shown on Netflix, and it’s likely that the contract hasn’t expired yet.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will complete Disney+’s collection of Star Wars movies in the Skywalker saga. The film, which hits theaters in December 2019, will arrive on Disney+ at some point in 2020 but not immediately. Fans still have to wait for around seven months for new movies to be added to Disney+.
