Disney’s The Rescuers finds Bernard and Bianca of the Rescue Aid Society going after a kidnapped little girl named Penny, who has been taken by sleazy partners Medusa and Snoops to find a big diamond worth a fortune. Medusa is brutal; not unlike Cruella de Vil, as she’s willing to kidnap and sacrifice the life of a little girl to secure her fortune.

Snoops is more like a henchman than a partner, given Medusa frequently insults him and later betrays him. Medusa isn’t someone audiences necessarily want to hang out with, and some of her quotes are pretty brutal, outlining just how cruel and vicious she really is.

10 “You Caught Penny Sending Messages In Bottles! You Blundering Fool! Can’t You Control A Little Girl!? Shut Up! I’m Taking The Next Flight Down To Devil’s Bayou.”

Medusa combines insults, an order, and a threat in the above quote during her phone call with Snoops. She demeans Snoops, her partner in crime, throughout the entire film, even though he’s the one that’s been doing the work by keeping Penny captive and forcing her to search for the Devil’s Eye diamond that Medusa must have.

Medusa was done waiting and had decided that if she wanted the diamond, she’d have to go and supervise Penny herself. She even slams the phone into its cradle, both ending the call and emphasizing her anger at Snoops. This is also when Bianca and Bernard first meet her, and it’s immediately obvious just how scary and dangerous Medusa is.

9 “That Little Brat Has Escaped Again! Nero, Brutus, Bring Her Back, Boys.”

Medusa has Snoops and her two crocodile pets, Nero and Brutus, do practically everything for her. Medusa is furious upon finding Penny gone from the riverboat, and she sends her crocodile companions out to search for her.

Penny later does a funny imitation of Medusa ordering her pets to go after Penny, so Medusa’s obviously done it plenty of times. Medusa wants what she wants, and she doesn’t care who she has to use or what she has to do to get it.

8 “Why Did You Let Her Escape? What Is Your Alibi This Time, Nitwit?”

After Nero and Brutus bring Penny back to the riverboat, Snoops lets Medusa know, and she quickly returns, storming into the room in a rage. She blames Snoops for allowing Penny to escape in the first place, even though she was there too. She’s happy to blame Snoops for everything.

Snoops defends himself by placing the blame on Nero and Brutus, as they weren’t watching Penny either, though he doesn’t dare mention that Medusa was also at fault. Their partnership is more than just a little dysfunctional; why did Snoops ever put up with Medusa?

7 “You Are Too Soft.”

Medusa berates Snoops for failing to leave Penny in the cave long enough to find the Devil’s Eye, and he responds that Penny wouldn’t take orders from him, leading Medusa to say the above quote. It’s true; Snoops is far easier for Penny, or anyone really, to deal with. Medusa is all over the place, her manipulative and obsessive nature with diamonds sometimes getting to her so much that she loses it if she doesn’t get what she wants.

Medusa is dangerous and unpredictable. She even draws out the word “soft” and places a long fingernail on Snoops’ nose, in a teasing manner rather than a threatening manner, as is her usual mode of operation.

6 “You Force Them To Like You, Idiot!”

Medusa teases Snoops, critiquing his “way with children.” She advises him that the best way with children is to “gain their confidence” and “make them like you.” When Snoops asks how to do that, she yells the above quote at him, her sweet tone instantly sour and annoyed.

Medusa’s way with children is far from good or healthy; she doesn’t force Penny to like her, she just forces her to do what she wants using threats and scare tactics. To emphasize her point, she even swings her cane at Snoops following the above statement. Medusa is cruel and violent, and when she says this quote, it really shows her true colors.

5 “Oh, Shut Up!”

One of Medusa’s favorite things to do is tell Snoops to “shut up.” It shows how much she values his input, really. As far as she’s concerned, she’s the boss, and she knows everything, though her plans ultimately land herself and Snoops in big trouble.

They not only lose the diamond, but also the riverboat, and because of Medusa’s backstabbing ways, their partnership as well. She really should’ve listened to him from time to time, as he had a bit more sense than she did.

4 “You Get Down There And Find The Big Diamond Or You Will Never See That Teddy Again!”

The above quote is one of Medusa’s scariest moments in the Disney film. She gets in Penny’s face, screaming at her, her nails looking like claws as she holds Penny’s teddy bear out of her reach and threatens her with the loss of her precious teddy if she doesn’t do as Medusa says.

Medusa’s patience is long gone by this point, and she doesn’t care if she’s just scarred Penny for life, or even if she’s about to send Penny to a potential watery grave. Medusa is ruthless and lacks a conscience; sacrificing a child to get a diamond is like Cruella de Vil killing puppies for dog skin coats.

3 “Snoops! What’s Wrong!?”

The funny thing about this quote is that, even though Medusa insults Snoops and calls him plenty of names, she still relies on him for everything. When her swamp mobile wouldn’t start right away, and when her gun jammed, Medusa shouted the above quote. For the swamp mobile, she shouted right in his face.

With the gun, she fiddles with it until she fires off a shot, which just barely misses his forehead and instead takes off some of the hair on his head. Medusa expects things to work right away, and if they don’t, her go-to is to blame her partner.

2 “Just Look At It. Filled With Power, For Its Owner.”

The things that matter in life to Medusa aren’t friends, family, or even love. It’s material things that she cares about, particularly diamonds. Though Penny brings plenty of other treasures that she and Snoops could sell and enjoy a good payday on, she totally ignores it because it’s not what she really wants.

When she finally gets her hands on the Devil’s Eye, she’s a little too mad with power; she betrays Snoops and threatens both his and Penny’s lives if they try pursuing her. Her overconfidence gets the best of her, as she failed to see Bianca, Bernard, Luke, Ellie Mae, and the others coming to rescue Penny.

1 “Stuck Tight? You Get That Diamond Or You’ll Never See Daylight Again!”

Medusa is certainly no “Auntie Medusa” to Penny. She risks Penny’s life without remorse by sending her into the black hole to find and retrieve the Devil’s Eye, and she threatens Penny with the above quote despite the fact that Penny is begging to be brought back up before she drowns due to the tide coming into the cave.

This threat is pretty brutal, especially to a little girl. Thankfully, Penny had Bianca and Bernard to help her and they all made it out in time, but if Penny had drowned, Medusa probably would’ve kidnapped another orphan to get the diamond for her.
