Spider-Man villains from across the multiverse will return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but Doctor Strange seems to be wrong about them. After a botched spell by Strange to erase the world’s knowledge of Spider-Man’s secret identity wreaks havoc on the multiverse, Spider-Man villains from other realities enter the MCU. Doctor Strange doesn’t seem to understand their histories in their respective universes, however.

Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, the iconic villain of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, is featured most prominently in No Way Home’s marketing, but another Raimi Trilogy adversary, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, is shown in detail in the film’s second trailer as well. The trailer also features the Raimi Trilogy’s Sandman and two villains from The Amazing Spider-Man films: Electro and The Lizard. Though still unconfirmed, it’s widely believed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will return in No Way Home as their respective iterations of Spider-Man.

Towards the end of No War Home’s second trailer, Doctor Strange claims that all of the multiverse villains die fighting their respective versions of Spider-Man, and this is reinforced a moment earlier when Doctor Octopus says that Spider-Man is fighting “ghosts.” While this is true in some villains’ cases, not all of Peter’s adversaries die in the Spider-Man films, including several villains who will appear in No Way Home. While the statement is ominous-sounding, it may be missing context.

In the Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe, four of Peter’s enemies died. Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, was impaled by his glider, and Venom (whose Raimi iteration doesn’t seem to be in No Way Home) was killed by a pumpkin bomb. Doctor Octopus and the New Goblin (who is also absent from the trailers) died in the process of redeeming themselves after a change of heart. Flint Marko, the Sandman, survived Spider-Man 3 following his redemption.

In The Amazing Spider-Man films, Doctor Strange’s statement is even more baffling, considering that none of Spider-Man’s villains died, except for one ambiguous case. Harry Osborn was captured after a brief stint as the Green Goblin, and The Lizard was too, after turning back into the human Curt Connors. The Rhino was presumably defeated by Spider-Man, who avoided killing his enemies. Max Dillon, aka Electro, might have died after being overloaded in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the film never specified his fate.

Though unlikely, the Spider-Man villains in No Way Home might be from universes that are similar to the Raimi and Amazing Spider-Man timelines, but not the exact ones that audiences are familiar with. In this case, perhaps all of the villains did die fighting Spider-Man. A more likely explanation for Strange’s line, however, is that he’s only referring to Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin since two of the villains shown in the trailer are confirmed to survive their respective encounters with Spider-Man. If Doctor Strange is indeed talking about all of the multiverse villains in the Spider-Man: No Way Home, however, he’s wrong.
