The new prologue trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion is already better than the last two films in the franchise. Director Colin Trevorrow is back at the helm for the third film in the series, which picks up where the last entry, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, left off. The first Jurassic World served as a fine reintroduction to the franchise and a soft remake of Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 classic Jurassic Park, offering a few new dinosaurs and characters, but little in the way of elevating the material.

The second entry in the Jurassic franchise, Fallen Kingdom, directed by J.A. Bayona, had a much more reserved, strange, and darker take on the franchise, that once again traded on tropes from Jurassic Park, but did very little to take things in a new, fresh, or exciting direction. If anything, the final events of Fallen Kingdom set the stage for something much more fitting for the franchise, unleashing the dinosaurs into the populated world, rather than seeing them roaming free on isolated islands.

Jurassic World: Dominion already has the set up to capitalize on the franchise’s potential and the latest prologue trailer shows the filmmakers are doing just that. For the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park, audiences are seeing dinosaurs off the island and interacting with a human population. Aside from the enthralling peek at dinosaurs roaming free 65 million years ago, the prologue also delivers a look at the creatures going berserk through cities and neighborhoods, making for a far more compelling visual punch than the usual affair of running through the jungle, screaming.

In addition to having dinosaurs roaming the civilized world, Jurassic World: Dominion also has the added benefit of joining together modern casts members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard with the original Jurassic Park alumni Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, who are all in the mix this time around. Creating a bridge between the two casts for the first time in the Jurassic franchise’s history should make for some unique and exciting character moments for all involved, as they all have something to offer in their histories of dealing with these revived monsters.

Seeing a T-Rex trample a drive-in recreates some nostalgic feelings from the first Jurassic Park’s T-Rex breakout, while also teasing the massive potential that could be explored in this new set up for the franchise. The ending of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom revealed a world of promise with the dinos finally set loose on the world, and it appears that Jurassic World: Dominion will take that potential and run with it—something fans have been hoping to see ever since it was first teased in The Lost World. Finally, the franchise is taking a step out of its comfort zone and by putting everyday people in harm’s way, giving the lead characters a genuine and time-sensitive threat to deal with, creating the kind of suspense needed for this kind of premise.
