Who says complaining doesn’t get things done? Last week, Bethesda released a surprise “update” for DOOM Eternal that added in the much-maligned Denuvo anti-cheat system. Not to be confused with the DRM solution (which was initially included with the game’s launch), this anti-cheat system was meant to deter cheaters in the game’s “Battlemode” multiplayer component. Sadly, the way Bethesda went about things was pretty underhanded.

Instead of announcing anything ahead of time, Denuvo was quietly snuck in and the company attempted to explain that decision. Gamers cried out online and began “review bombing” the game across multiple sites. In response to that backlash, id Software’s Marty Stratton took to Reddit to announce that Denuvo will be gone in the next update.

As Stratton wrote, “Despite our best intentions, feedback from players has made it clear that we must re-evaluate our approach to anti-cheat integration. With that, we will be removing the anti-cheat technology from the game in our next PC update.” When this update will arrive hasn’t been determined, but if you installed Eternal in protest, you won’t need to have it uninstalled for long.

The Reddit post goes into some detail about why id Software made the choice for Denuvo. According to Stratton, the team wanted to protect Battlemode from cheaters as soon as possible while also establishing consistent anti-cheat methods for when “Invasion” mode comes to the campaign. Kernal-level integrations have shown the most success in battling cheaters, though they aren’t 100% effective. Players were also saddened by how long it took id to deal with DOOM (2016)’s cheating problem, which made the company act fast.

Put into consideration, it does make sense why id simply chose Denuvo. I doubt fans would have accepted it even with some pre-release notification, but at least it wouldn’t have felt like an underhanded move. There are certainly more effective methods out there that won’t potentially open up your computer to more harm.

What id will be doing with Battlemode remains to be seen, but at least Eternal won’t have its reputation dragged through the mud. The game is far too good to be remembered for Bethesda’s boneheaded mistakes.
