The upcoming Renfield has cast Nicolas Cage as Dracula, which is pretty much the monster movie role he was born to play. Of course, Nicolas Cage’s Dracula will be following a long tradition of iconic actors taking on the role. Bela Lugosi’ Dracula from 1931 in many ways set the template for those who followed, while Christopher Lee’s Hammer Dracula movies brought both menace and a seductive edge to the character. For many, Gary Oldman’s turn in Bram Stoker’s Dracula from 1992 is one of the definitive takes.

While Nicolas Cage has delivered many subtle, nuanced performances throughout his long career – including 2021’s acclaimed Pig – he’s best known for his hammy, wild performances. From David Lynch’s Wild At Heart to Face/Off or even Prisoners Of The Ghostland, Cage is an actor unafraid to go big. Despite being a fan of the genre, it’s only in recent years that Cage has gravitated towards the horror genre. He received great notices for his work in Color Out Of Space and Willy’s Wonderland and has one very exciting horror project in the pipeline.

The upcoming Renfield will star Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as the titular character, who is the servant of the vampire from Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. The movie is based on a story concept by Robert Kirkman (who is also producing) while The Tomorrow War’s Chris McKay will direct. Nicolas Cage has also signed on to play the movie’s version of Count Dracula, and while plot details are currently scarce, Kirkman has previously described Renfield as an “extremely violent comedy,” hinting at the tone. Nicolas Cage as Dracula also feels like the monster role he was born to play.

While he didn’t play the part in the original movie, Cage gave a memorable performance as the titular antihero in Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. While the sequel itself received mixed reviews, Cage’s unhinged energy (he used what he described as “shaman techniques” during filming to channel the character) made it memorable. He even visited the castle of Vlad the Impaler – Bram Stoker’s Dracula inspiration – during filming and spent the night there for inspiration. It’s clear from Cage’s work he relates to both outsiders and monsters, and Nicolas Cage’s Dracula performance in Renfield promises an interpretation like no other.

Dracula is a role that comes with a lot of baggage, but Cage will be able to avoid the cliches while injecting new life into the part. He’s fearless as a performer and isn’t afraid to risk ridicule in pursuit of something interesting. Kirkman’s description of Renfield as a dark comedy also suggests Nicolas Cage’s Dracula might lean towards the more stylized performances he’s famous for – though it probably won’t quite as broad as his meme-spawning work in 1988 Nicolas Cage horror movie Vampire’s Kiss. Response to Cage’s Dracula casting in Renfield has already been positive, as it’s hard to imagine a better pairing of actor and material. Maybe Renfield won’t live up to the expectations such a combination implies, but the one thing Cage’s Dracula definitely won’t be is boring.
