Drag Race All Stars 5 Queens Who Did Better Than Their Original Season (& 5 Who Were Underwhelming)

When the first season RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars premiered in 2012, fans were excited to see some of their favorite Drag Race alumni back on their screens; as well as queens from separate seasons finally going head-to-head. The first iteration of All Stars suffered due to making the queens compete in teams, but over the subsequent 4 seasons, the game has been revamped in order to give queens the chance to compete at their full potential.

For the queens, All Stars is either a chance at redemption or showcasing the ways that they’ve grown since their original season. Their re-arrivals into the workroom have had varying results with some consistently slaying the challenges and others falling short. Due to the twists presented throughout each season, winning or losing the crown doesn’t have as much of a bearing on what fans view as being an improvement on the show. Here are 5 All-Stars who did better than their original season and 5 who were underwhelming.

10 Underwhelming: Pandora Boxx

Pandora Boxx came into All Stars 1 as a fan-favorite from season 2. The talented queen came in fifth place on her original season and was voted Miss Congeniality. However, viewers did not get a chance to watch Pandora shine on All Stars due to her becoming a casualty of the season’s format.

Because the “teams” were only locked in when two of the queens chose each other as their first choice, Pandora went through 3 rounds of voting not matching with any of her first choices. As a result, she was matched with the only other queen not chosen: the polarizing Mimi Imfurst. Dismayed at the pairing, Pandora seemed to give up before the competition even began. Both queens underperformed on their first challenge and sashayed away when Mimi Imfurst lost the LSFYL.

9 Better: Aja

Aja had a massive following on Instagram and was expected to be a contender for the Season 9 crown. But as she learned the hard way, there was #nofilter on reality television and the judges harshly critiqued her IRL appearance. This affected her confidence and overall performance, especially when being compared to fan-favorite Valentina.

Given this underwhelming showing, it was surprising to see Aja on the cast list for All Stars 3 so fresh off her season. But Aja overcame audience skepticism and proceeded to be one of the winners of the first challenge; doing well up until her (widely contested) elimination.

8 Underwhelming: Thorgy Thor

Fans were eager to see season 8’s Thorgy Thor competing in a Bob-free environment in All Stars 3. Her “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” narrative had endeared her to fans, and it finally looked like she would have a chance to compete (and win challenges) at her full potential.

Her time on All Stars 3 was brief and she was sent home on only the second episode. To add insult to injury, it was quickly apparent to viewers (and Thorgy) that production had set her up to fail, giving her undeserved “filler queen” treatment.

7 Better: Monique Heart

Monique Heart truly brought viewers the “ooh-ah-ah” sensation with her talking heads and “brown cow stunning,” antics in her season 10 debut. Despite her charms, Heart was held back by her lack of funds, often making garments during challenges since she couldn’t afford to bring outfits.

She entered All Star’s 4 with a bang. Her lovable persona was not only intact, but her wardrobe and makeup had been majorly upgraded! Unlike season 10, she went on to win not one challenge but 3 and lasted until the end as a 3rd/4th place finisher. This paved the way to starring in a new series for WOW Presents Plus.

6 Underwhelming: Roxxxy Andrews

Roxxxy came on to All Stars 2 with one goal in mind: damage control. In season 5, she’d made the Top 3, but was widely bashed by fans for the way she’d treated winner Jinkx Monsoon throughout the competition. Her AS2 entrance was initially successful in redeeming herself and she even won the very first challenge.

But then things went downhill. While she made it to the finale, it was lending her shirt to the right queen rather than her track record that got her there. And while consistently being in the bottom for 5 episodes in a row is iconic for different reasons, her AS2 run was nowhere near as dominant as she had proven herself to be in season 5.

5 Better: Shangela

Yes, this queen’s third go at the crown on All Stars 3 was better than her previous 2 appearances, but it was just as bittersweet. She went from being the first out of season 2, and 6th place in season 3, to being a frontrunner for the crown during the All Stars 3 finale. Many were sure that it was hers to lose.

However, a jury twist saw Shangela finishing in 3rd/4th place. But regardless of this heartbreaking outcome, Shangela’s run on All Stars 3 cemented her status as an all-time great, on and off the show.

4 Underwhelming: Derrick Berry

“WoOoh! She did it again!” making an appearance on All Stars 5 after her original run on season 8. Derrick Berry came just short of the season 8 finale after being unable to break free of the “Britney Box” (the box being her rep as the #1 Britney Spears impersonator). Viewers were looking forward to seeing Derrick being her own queen on All Stars 5.

However her entrance was another Britney gag and her talent show act, impersonations, fell flat when she performed as celebrities who came nowhere close to her Britney. The only potential Derrick seemed to bring to AS5 was her outside drama with competitor India Ferrah. But before any further drama could ignite, Derrick was the first to be sent home.

3 Better: Katya

Katya quickly became a fan-favorite on season 7 of Drag Race for her quirky persona and self-deprecating wit. She made it all the way up to the final 5 and was even voted Ms. Congeniality. But that same self-deprecation is what held her back from initially performing at her full potential.

Katya returned to All Stars 2 rejuvenated, confident, and incredibly self-aware of what had endeared her to fans previously. She utilized this to win 3 challenges (including Snatch Game!), and make it to the final 3.

2 Underwhelming: Adore Delano

Once voted Drag Race’s “#1 fan favorite” of all time, Adore Delano made her mark as a scrappy underdog-turned-runner up in season 6. Many had her pegged as one to make it to the very end on All Stars 2.

However, Adore could not rely on her personality to ease judges critiques the way she had done on her original season. In the first episode, she ended up in the bottom 3, shaking her greatly. Unable to reacclimatize to Drag Race’s competitive environment, Adore shocked and disappointed viewers by quitting in the second episode.

1 Better: Bendelacreme

Bendelacreme is another Miss Congeniality on this list. Her run on season 6 endeared her to fans who were excited and curious to see her return to All Stars 3. But no one expected her to come back the way that she did.

She won 5 challenges (4 of these consecutively) and, despite being the indisputable candidate for the crown, she eliminated herself. All because she felt she’d proven she was an all-star. Since then, no other queen has come close to Bendelachrist’s track record or, arguably, dropped a bomb so shocking.
