The Dragon Ball series depicts the adventures of some of the most powerful warriors in the known universe. While Goku and Vegeta have proven to be the strongest fighters around, the manga and anime adaptations have show us some tough women in their own right. Sure, you don’t want to mess with the Z Fighters, but you also don’t want to get in the way of the likes of Chi-Chi, Videl, Android 18, Launch, and Pan. Chief among them all, though, is Goku’s oldest friend Bulma.
From the first episode of Dragon Ball, through Dragon Ball Z, and into Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Super, and the films, Bulma has been right there with Goku through nearly all his adventures. A technological genius with a sense of adventure, she has thrust herself into every imaginable scenario, whether it turned out to be a good idea or not. As much as she likes to talk, though, she’s usually not equipped to deal with the kind of trouble she gets herself into. From age 16 to 56, we’ve seen Bulma go through some of the most traumatizing experiences and still somehow manage to find her way out on top in the end.
20 That Time She Wore A Bunny Costume
Bulma had a habit of changing outfits throughout the Dragon Ball series and its many follow ups. No costume was more infamous, though, than that bunny costume she was forced to wear. At one point, she lost all the capsules she had on her that stored her clothes. As a result, she has nothing clean to wear until Oolong gives her the bunny costume.
The costume objectified her and caused quite a few gross men to look at her a little too closely. At one point, the outfit also makes her look like a member of the Rabbit Mob, which causes many people to fear her. Thankfully she’s able to get a change of clothes and finally be rid of the suit once and for all.
19 That Time She Was Put In Chains
In the 1990 Dragon Ball Z film The World’s Strongest, Dr. Kochin brings the evil Dr. Wheelo back to life in the form of a brain inside a giant robot. Things turn poorly for Bulma when Kochin and his Bio-Men find Master Roshi on his island and believe him to be the strongest man in the world. The bad guys take both of them hostage and Bulma is put in chains.
Thankfully, Goku is actually the strongest person in the world, and together with Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan, he is able to save his friends. Before everything is over, Bulma is nearly shot and Dr. Wheelo tries to swap bodies with Goku, but the day is finally saved. Bulma did not ask to be involved in any of this.
18 That Time She Was Abandoned As A Mother
The relationship between Bulma and Vegeta surprised everyone, from her friends on the show to the fans who watched it. The idea of Vegeta settling down and starting a family with anyone, much less Bulma of all people, seemed unlikely, considering how little he valued the inhabitants of Earth. Still, their affair managed to produce a child.
While Bulma had no problem showing up with little baby Trunks, much to everyone’s surprise, she didn’t exactly share the status of her relationship with Vegeta. That’s because he pretty much abandoned her after she gave birth. He hovered around in order to train, but Vegeta didn’t really want anything to do with her for a long time. She was left to raise the kid all on her own.
17 That Time She Was Taken By Space Pirates
When Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin travel to Namek in order to use the planet’s Dragon Balls to wish their friends back to life, the trio find plenty of trouble out in space. At one point, a ship made out of mirrors finds them and captures them, believing the three to be part of Frieza’s world-conquering army.
The group of travelers are orphans who managed to escape their planet’s destruction thanks to their nearly invisible ship. For a moment it looked like Bulma and the boys weren’t going to make it to Namek, but the orphans have a change of heart and believe her that they aren’t in league with Frieza. The group’s leader even gives Bulma coordinates for a shortcut to Namek, but it was definitely a hairy situation.
16 That Time She Became A Monster
Things didn’t go so well for Bulma during the “Garlic Jr. Saga” in Dragon Ball Z. Krillin’s new girlfriend Maron calls her old and hits on Yamcha, and then the Earth is attacked without Goku or Vegeta to help. When the villainous Garlic Jr. returns to Earth for revenge, he releases the Black Water Mist and Bulma, along with many of her friends, become demonic vampires that serve him.
She attacks Gohan, Krillin, and Maron, who remain unaffected, but the group is able to escape with the help of Piccolo. It’s only until Kami and Mr. Popo release the Sacred Water from the Lookout that Bulma and the rest are changed back into their former selves. It was a close call too, because if 24 hours were allowed to pass, the change would be permanent.
15 That Time She Was Nearly Stranded In Space
In the Dragon Ball Z anime, Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan’s trip to Namek isn’t as easy as it was in the manga. The three travelers end up on a planet they believe to be the real Namek, but it turns out to be a lie. On Fake Namek, they meet Raiti and Zaacro who help them hunt down the planet’s Dragon Balls, but everything seems to be happening too easily.
Unfortunately, it is revealed that everything on the planet is an illusion and the two Namekians are actually just alien shapeshifters looking to strand Bulma and her friends on the planet. They very nearly succeed in taking the Namekian ship, but Krillin and Gohan manage to save the day. Imagine Bulma stranded on a deserted deathtrap of a planet.
14 That Time She Was A Frog
While on Namek during the “Frieza Saga,” the Z Fighters go up against the Ginyu Force. Though Vegeta manages to kill nearly all of them, their leader Captain Ginyu is spared when he accidentally switches bodies with a frog. In the Dragon Ball Z manga he is never heard from again, but the anime continues to show him in his frog form.
At one point, Ginyu actually manages to steal the body of Bulma, trapping her in the frog. Though Bulma is nearly trapped inside the shell of a frog forever, Gohan realizes her true identity and Ginyu outs himself as a supporter of Frieza. Before the villain can switch bodies with Piccolo, Gohan throws the frog in the way, returning Bulma back to her original boy.
13 That Time She Was A Carrot
In Dragon Ball, Goku and Bulma run into the Rabbit Mob and their boss Monster Carrot, who is actually a giant anthropomorphic bunny rabbit. The group controls a village in the Diablo Desert in part because the villagers fear Monster Carrot’s ability to transform people into carrots. At one point, he actually transforms Bulma into a carrot when she touches him.
Goku tries to fight him but is afraid he might hurt the carrot that Bulma has now become. Thankfully Yamcha and Puar are able to intervene and save the carrot Bulma from Monster Carrot’s clutches. Goku is then able to defeat his enemy and force him to return his friend to her natural state again. Being turned into a carrot must have been an interesting experience.
12 That Time She Was A Mindless Minion
During the “Baby Saga” In Dragon Ball GT, Earth’s population becomes possessed by the evil artificial lifeform known as Baby. Given her scientific genius, Bulma takes charge of moving the population of the planet to the new Tuffle Planet. She also builds a device that helps Super Baby Vegeta transform into a Golden Great Ape, which nearly allows him to defeat Goku.
Baby Vegeta is eventually beaten and Goku manages to kill the villain. Meanwhile, Bulma and the rest of Earth’s population are freed from Baby’s influence when the Sacred Water is used. It’s easy to take Bulma for granted, since she has no fighting abilities, but in the wrong hands, her technical knowledge and skills with machines can do some serious damage to her friends.
11 That Time She Wet Herself
Things did not start off well for Bulma in her quest to find the Dragon Balls. In the very first episode of the anime, she is seen wearing a pink shirt with her name on it and a matching pink skirt. This look didn’t last the length of the episode because she had an accident when a pterodactyl attacked her and took her away.
The dinosaur flew her up into the air before Goku managed to rescue her from its clutches. The two fell from the sky, but Goku manages to secure Bulma against the side of a mountain with his Power Pole. Though she’s safe, the entire ordeal is far too terrifying for a 16-year-old girl and she wets herself while hanging there. Bulma makes her first costume change after this incident.
10 That Time She Was Kidnapped
During the “Frieza Saga,” Bulma runs into plenty of trouble on the planet Namek. While she is attempting to collect the Dragon Balls, Frieza’s minions Blueberry and Raspberry find Bulma and kidnap her. They come into possession of her Dragon Ball and force her to show them where the rest of them are hidden, not knowing that she doesn’t have them.
Bulma is spared from meeting Frieza face to face by tricking the two soldiers into following her deep under water. Instead of finding the Dragon Balls, they are instead attacked by a giant crab. Being captured by an evil alien army is certainly not a pleasant experience, but Bulma’s quick thinking allowed her to avoid an even worse fate at the hands of Frieza.
9 That Time She Watched Her Boyfriend Die
Before she settled down with Vegeta, Bulma had a longstanding relationship with Yamcha. The two dated on and off before finally going their separate ways. One of the biggest moments of their relationship was when Yamcha was killed in battle against the Saibamen unleashed by Vegeta and Nappa when it self-destructed while clinging to his body.
Watching the battle on national television, Bulma was devastated when her boyfriend met his demise. It would be over a year before the two were reunited. Brought back to life once again, Yamcha and Bulma picked up where their relationship had left off, but things eventually went south and they broke up for good. They remained friends, but Vegeta was there to pick up the pieces in the end.
8 That Time She Was Nearly Sacrificed
In the Dragon Ball movie Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle, Goku and Krillin are sent to find the powerful Sleeping Princess diamond for Master Roshi. Their friends follow suit before getting attacked by a group of monsters living in a castle. Bulma is taken in by the vampiric demon Lucifer, who initially treats her well, but he soons shows his true colors and captures her.
Held hostage by Lucifer’s butler, Bulma is introduced to all manner of terrifying beings within the castle. As a normal human girl, Bulma was defenseless against these supernatural horror threats. Her blood is to be drained by Igor as a toast to the destruction of the sun, but Yamcha is able to save her from that fate at the last second.
7 That Time She Created A Villain
At the end of Dragon Ball GT, it becomes apparent that the Dragon Balls have been overused over the last few years. The result causes an evil dragon to come forth from the Dragon Balls and Shadow Dragons to emerge. It appears that Bulma’s creation of the Dragon Radar was the reason this all happened and everyone blames her for this new predicament.
The negative energy from the Dragon Balls eventually leads to the creation of Omega Shenron, the ultimate villain of the series. It’s unfair to lay the blame at Bulma’s feet, though. Sure, she originally wanted the Dragon Balls for her own selfish desires, but she has collected them on many occasions in order to set things right in the world. This is all just an unfortunate side effect of all the trouble they have gone through over the years.
6 That Time She Was Eaten
Dragon Ball Z has seen so many characters die only to come back to life that it’s almost like a comic book at this point (oh wait, it is). While several of the main characters have died multiple times, Bulma has mostly been spared. That is, until Super Buu attacks many of the Z Fighters’ loved ones.
After battling Gotenks on the Lookout, Super Buu unleashes his Chocolate Beam on all those around him, turning turning Android 18, Bulma, Krillin, Marron, Master Roshi, Mr. Popo, Oolong, Ox-King, Puar, Videl, and Yamcha into chocolate. He transforms them and eats them, effectively killing everyone there. In the afterlife, Bulma is left to gossip with several of the others until they are wished back to life with the Dragon Balls.
5 That Time She Was Knocked Out
In Dragon Ball Super, Bulma’s birthday party is crashed by the God of Destruction known as Beerus. Several of her friends and family are put in danger by this extraordinarily powerful being, but when Vegeta’s life is put in danger, Bulma steps in to protect her husband. She slaps Beerus, but he quickly retaliates and knocks her out cold.
Vegeta, seeing what the God of Destruction had just done to his beloved wife, was sent into a rage that allowed him to fight his opponent more evenly. Thankfully, Bulma ended up being ok, and Goku later joked about the whole thing because everyone saw how much Vegeta actually cared about his wife. Then Bulma beat up Goku for suggesting they try this method more often and not helping out when he could.
4 That Time She Was Hurt By Her Friend
Future Trunks comes from a timeline where Goku died of heart disease and the evil androids were able to kill all the Z Fighters. After some time travel, he is able to save his reality and stop the onslaught of villains. However, in Dragon Ball Super, a new villain appears to destroy what remains of civilization, and this enemy looks just like Goku.
Bulma named the villain Goku Black because he looks just like her former friend who had died years ago. Bulma is ended by someone using Goku’s face, making it all the more insulting in the end. Trunks sees his mother’s death before traveling to the past in order to get help defeating Goku Black and preventing the devastation he unleashed on his timeline.
3 That Time She Watched Her Husband Die
Things took a really dark turn during the “Golden Frieza Saga” in Dragon Ball Super. Frieza returned from the dead once again in order to get his revenge on Goku and Vegeta. Despite the villain’s new power upgrade, he still proves to be weaker than his opponents. Just as Vegeta is about to kill Frieza, he manages to unleash one desperate attack that destroys the entire planet.
Bulma was one of the few who witnessed the battle and was spared from Frieza’s attack with a force field by Whis. Despite her safety, she witnesses the destruction of Earth, where all her friends, and her husband, are killed. Thankfully Beerus is able to undo everything and Goku is able to stop it from happening, but it was still devastating to watch firsthand.
2 Every Time She Was Harassed By Master Roshi
Bulma has seen a lot of things in her lifetime, and she’s dealt with a lot of awful, evil people. No one has treated her as poorly as Master Roshi has over the years. As someone who is supposed to be her friend after everything they have gone through, Roshi has really put her in a lot of uncomfortable positions—something he does to every woman he comes across.
In Dragon Ball, Bulma is just 16 years old, and yet Master Roshi still creeps on her constantly. It’s so bad that Bulma had to learn to take advantage of the old man’s perversions in order to get him to do some good. Usually, though, it gets so bad that Roshi grabs her against her will, or at least tries. She ends up having to hurt him in one way or another.
1 That Time Goku Took Her Pants Off
When Bulma meets Goku for the first time, he is a naive child who knows almost nothing about the world. Goku, not knowing the difference between men and women, takes off Bulma’s underwear while she is sleeping and realizes that she doesn’t have the same anatomy he does. Bulma doesn’t realize what has happened, and it leads to a very embarrassing moment for her.
While collecting the Dragon Balls, she comes into contact with the gross old man Master Roshi. In order to get his Dragon Ball, she offers to flash him her underwear. However, she has no idea her underwear isn’t still on, so she ends up showing off a lot more than she meant to. It’s only later when she finds them on the floor of her house that she realizes what Goku did to her.
