Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is supposedly heading into multiplayer DLC territory, but Dragon Ball FighterZ already has that down perfectly.

There’s been some interesting talk around Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot lately. The latest news revealed that online multiplayer is coming to the game, which came as a big surprise. The expectation was for new story content, or at the least some challenging new boss battles. Those things are on the way, but it’s the multiplayer content that really has people talking. What could a single-player RPG do for a multiplayer mode? One theory is a battle mode based on the Tournament of Power. That would be a mistake, because another game is already doing it better.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is by and large the best fighting game based on the franchise. One thing that makes it stand out on a mechanical level, as is often the case with developer Arc System Works, is that the roster is diverse on both a visual and gameplay level. This is important for making the game competitive and entertaining, but also for honoring the bizarre martial arts styles of the Dragon Ball world. The character DLC (mostly) builds upon the impressive variety.

Early FighterZ drew a lot of criticism for its lack of character variety. Specifically, fans were unhappy with the number of Gokus and Vegetas being offered in the paid DLC. The latest Season 3 DLC continues the trend with Ultra Instinct Goku, but ArcSys was wise to announce his arrival alongside another character: Kefla. The fused Super Saiyan is a fan-favorite, and her arrival trailer teased the game’s version of the Tournament of Power. The messaging seems to say “Yes there’s more Goku, but rest assured we know the Tournament of Power is about much more.”

Compare this to how Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot advertises its upcoming DLC. It’s clear that the Beerus content is centered on Goku and his Super Saiyan God transformation.

To be fair, Vegeta will also get the Super Saiyan God ability. And the game is called Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. For a single player RPG about Goku’s adventures, a DLC that focuses on expanding his story and unlocking more of his power makes total sense. It’s just the recently-announced online multiplayer aspect that baffles me.

The initial announcement was brief and in Japanese, so there’s some debate over what the online multiplayer entails. Some think it related to Kakarot’s upcoming card game mode. Others think it could be an actual battle system structured under the Tournament of Power framework. The card game might be a fun, Gwent-esque surprise. But there’s no way online multiplayer battles could match what FighterZ is doing.

Nevermind that FighterZ is an actual competitive fighting game. It’s more that Kakarot lacks character variety. The arena fighting mechanics don’t allow for characters to have their own style. The main difference between Goku, Gohan, Piccolo and everyone else is how their combos look, and maybe how wide/fast their beams shoot. Online battles using this system would probably just be a bunch of Gokus rushing each other and racing to see who can charge up an EX Spirit Bomb first.

I’m down for more Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot content. The world is a joy to explore and the references go deep. And those are the things I want to see the DLC focus on. Give us more lore behind Beerus and Whis. Let us explore a new planet. That would make the DLC way more valuable than a multiplayer battle mode in a single-player RPG. Especially when we already have Dragon Ball FighterZ and its wonderfully diverse character DLC.
