Dragon Ball may be delivering a second major retcon regarding Piccolo’s demonic origin story. A recent issue of the Dragon Ball Super manga continuation suggests that Piccolo’s species, the Namekians, may not be what fans thought they were.

In the original Dragon Ball anime, Goku and his allies were menaced by a foe who called himself Demon King Piccolo, an evil being of great power. At the time, it was believed by both the fans and the heroes that he was a supernatural character. Years later, Piccolo and the Z-Warriors discovered that he was actually an alien all along, and that his people were responsible for the creation of the Dragon Balls. In the Frieza Saga, the main characters visited Planet Namek and encountered other members of his people, including Dende, Nail, and Guru. Their planet was unfortunately destroyed by Frieza, but their kind survived and now they have a different home, New Namek.

A scene on New Namek in chapter 69 of the Dragon Ball Super manga has revealed that the Namekians aren’t actually from Universe 7. According to Namekian elder Moori, the Namekians came to this universe from another “realm”. Moori doesn’t elaborate on what realm they came from, but his choice of words indicates that he’s not talking about another universe, like Universe 6 (which has its own Namekian homeworld). Instead, he may be talking about one of the different dimensions that exists in the world of Dragon Ball, such as the Demon Realm. Dragon Ball revealing that the Namekians are actually from the Demon Realm in particular would have huge connotations for a character Piccolo.

Such a big change to their origin would carry a lot of meaning, especially since the Z-Warrior was known as “Demon King Piccolo” in the first place. If it’s true that the Namekians really are demonic in nature, that would mean Dragon Ball is taking back its alien retcon or at reworking it. Either way this would suggest that Piccolo wasn’t actually wrong to think of himself as a demon. As unexpected as this would be for the franchise, it would certainly be a fun way to tie back to Piccolo’s first origin in the original Dragon Ball.

It’s also worth wondering if there would be some other point to exploring the backstory of the Namekians and where they came from. The narrative purpose of exposing a Piccolo-Demon Realm connection could be to explain why the Namekians left their old home. It may be that whatever drove them out will soon come to Universe 7 and challenge the heroes. An excursion into the Demon Realm is one journey that Goku and the Z-Warriors have never been on in Dragon Ball canon, so it does feel like something that’s bound to happen sooner or later. If it’s related to the origins of Piccolo’s species, there’s a good chance he could have a big part in the story.
