If Vegeta becomes a God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super, his long road to redemption would finally be complete. Introduced at the outset of Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta provided the first big bad of Goku’s adult life. As prince of the planet he was named after, Vegeta was one of many Saiyans who rampaged across the galaxy, conquering worlds at the behest of Frieza. Desiring enough power to overthrow Frieza, Vegeta then visited Earth to find the Dragon Balls… but he found a best friend instead. Thanks to Goku’s influence, he’s now married with children, fighting enemies with honor, and Dragon Ball Super has even seen Vegeta morally grapple with the bloody history of his people.

Dragon Ball Super has also dropped many a hint that Vegeta will eventually replace Beerus as Universe 7’s God of Destruction. Studying under Whis, Goku and Vegeta are the only contenders to replace Beerus, and since Goku is too kind-hearted, Vegeta alone is up to the job. This eventuality was foreshadowed during Vegeta’s Tournament of Power fight against Toppo. Although the Saiyan mocked his opponent’s ambition to become a God of Destruction, Vegeta fought evenly with Toppo, proving he was already on par with a deity. The Dragon Ball Super manga has been even more explicit – not only does Beerus teach Vegeta the signature God of Destruction technique, the lazy purple cat gifts his student the same gold earring worn by himself and the other Gods.

Vegeta would be a perfect God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super, benefiting both the universe and his own character. Although the Vegeta of today is virtually unrecognizable from the snarky, bloodthirsty Saiyan who arrived on Earth several decades ago, a semblance of those darker tendencies remain. Even now, Vegeta still feels one bad day away from blowing up a stadium full of innocent people. Ascending to the God of Destruction role, however, would provide an outlet for Vegeta’s Saiyan rage, allowing him to blow up planets without submitting to those Saiyan instincts.

More importantly, Vegeta as a God of Destruction would complete the Saiyan prince’s long-running redemption arc. Since the Majin Buu saga (and perhaps even before), Vegeta has been slowly atoning for past sins, sacrificing himself against bad guys, training a young protege in Cabba, protecting the people of New Namek from Moro, and more. The best consequence of Vegeta becoming God of Destruction is that he can police Universe 7 from warrior races like the Saiyans, preventing the same tragedies he caused in the past from happening all over again. With Frieza resurrected and criminal organizations such as the Heeters in operation, the Dragon Ball world is full of enemies who conquer and subjugate peaceful worlds. It’s a God of Destruction’s duty to maintain balance, meaning Vegeta would be responsible for protecting planets from those who destroy with reckless abandon. How fitting that the prince who once terrorized innocent civilizations completes his redemption by defending worlds from the evil tyrants that have risen since the Saiyans were wiped out.

For so long, Vegeta’s main motivation in Dragon Ball has been to surpass Goku. Everyone knows that’s never going to happen, and the character would be better served with a fresh direction. Taking over Beerus’ responsibilities as God of Destruction (no doubt with a great deal of reluctance) would finally give Vegeta a purpose other than hopelessly chasing a lost cause in his quest to beat Kakarot.
