Dragon Ball: Why Future Trunks Can Go Super Saiyan God Now
Future Trunks hasn’t obtained this form, but it seems quite likely that with his current power, the character could become a Super Saiyan God.

If he tried, Future Trunks should be able to access the Super Saiyan God form in the Dragon Ball anime. Thus far, this is an ability that’s only been used by Goku and Vegeta in Dragon Ball canon, but that could change at some point down the life if the character were to return.
When Future Trunks re-entered the picture in Dragon Ball Super, he was several levels below Goku and Vegeta, who had made significant gains since Trunks’ departure at the end of the Cell Saga. Trunks was shocked to discover that Goku had unlocked Super Saiyan 3, and was similarly stunned to witness their Super Saiyan Blue forms. Because of how powerful they were, Trunks largely had to depend on them through most of the conflict with Goku Black and Zamasu. However, Future Trunks received his fair share of the action. Through training with Vegeta and constant fighting with the two villains, Trunks achieved new levels of power and proved instrumental in beating them. With his Sword of Hope ability, Trunks even managed to destroy the body of their merged form, Fused Zamasu.
Trunks’ arc in Dragon Ball Super provides evidence that he could pull off the Super Saiyan God transformation. After becoming the first character to discover Super Saiyan Rage, Trunks performed remarkably well in battle against their enemies. He held his own considerably well against Goku Black, whose Super Saiyan Rosé state is on par with Super Saiyan Blue. Plus, he was able to put up a fight against Fused Zamasu. What’s so impressive about that is the fact that Goku and Vegeta had to fuse to be a match for him. Trunks obtaining enough strength to fight opponents of divine power like them serves as a good indication that he now has what it takes to make the leap to Super Saiyan God – or beyond.
Future Trunks could get the power-up from the Saiyan ritual that Goku had to go through in the Battle of Gods Saga, but it looks like he wouldn’t need it. In the Golden Frieza Saga, Vegeta skipped straight to Super Saiyan Blue without the ritual. With Trunks having access to a similar if not greater level of power than what Vegeta had at the time, he too should be able to forego the ritual. In fact, it’s at least possible that he could bypass Super Saiyan God and immediately unlock Super Saiyan Blue just like Vegeta did. Giving him one of these two forms would be good for the character, especially since it’s unclear if Trunks can use Super Saiyan Rage whenever he wants. Super Saiyan God would be a more reliable tool for him in combat.
It’s worth noting that in the non-canon Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime shorts, Trunks did get to attain the Super Saiyan God form. That of course has no effect on continuity, but the positive reception to the new look has shown that there is a hunger for it from the fanbase. Super Saiyan God was sadly underutilized in Dragon Ball Super, with Goku quickly replacing it and Vegeta only accessing it in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. With that in mind, it would be interesting to see a character like Future Trunks make better use of it.
