Dune is one of those science fiction movies that is sure to go down as one of the best in the genre. It has all of the ingredients of a grand space epic, with noble families clashing over power and betrayals and assassinations galore. However, it is also a movie that is about the relationships between and among people, and the characters are fully-drawn and as full of contradictions as those that live in the world.

In fact, who one prefers as a character says a great deal about one’s personality. So what does your favorite Dune character say about you?

Duke Leto – Noble And Stubborn

Oscar Isaac excels at playing Duke Leto Atreides, a man who has a noble sense of duty and absolute loyalty to his family, even if that means he remains ignorant to the broader threat to his life.

Those who see him as their favorite character are likely to exhibit some of those same characteristics, and they are probably also the type of people who find it difficult to believe that others don’t live according to the same set of values.

Baron Harkonnen – Ruthless And Cunning

Every epic has to have its larger-than-life villain, and in Dune that is the sinister Baron. Though he’s not quite as disturbing as he is in the books, he’s still a formidable character and one of the movie’s most powerful.

Viewers who appreciate what he’s able to accomplish are no doubt people who look at every event as an opportunity to solidify their own ambitions, and they’re also likely the kind of people that are willing to betray anyone so long as they can get ahead in the game of life.

Duncan Idaho – Brave And Loyal

There are few Jason Momoa characters as likable as Duncan, the warrior who always fights for what he believes in and is very willing and able to sacrifice his life for them.

He’s the type of person that would appeal to those who value loyalty above else, and who will do everything in their power to make sure that their friends stay out of harm’s way, even if it means that they turn a blind eye to their own health and well-being (both physically and mentally).

Gurney Halleck – Courageous And Skilled

Gurney Halleck is another member of the Atreides household who proves just how loyal he is. Not only does he train Paul in the art of hand-to-hand combat, he also charges right into battle against the Harkonnens, even knowing that it could well be a futile gesture.

Viewers who love Gurney likewise are the type of people who will go to the mat for the people that they love, even if they are also willing to tell them things that they might not want to hear.

Lady Jessica – Subtle And Stalwart

Independence is one of the key traits of Lady Jessica, who went against her instructions as a Bene Gesserit to give Leto the son he wanted rather than the daughter that she was supposed to provide. However, she is also a subtle thinker, who is always looking for ways to help her son survive the threats to his life.

She appeals to the sort of person that tries to play a long game and who will always look for the chance to help their friends and loved ones get ahead in life, even if that means they put their needs second.

Liet Kynes – Impartial And Just

Liet Kynes takes her responsibility as a representative of the Emperor very seriously, so much so in fact that she is willing for a long time to turn a blind eye to the mendacity and treachery of the Harkonnens. However, she ultimately shows that she is a person committed to justice, particularly for the planet and the people that she loves.

Viewers who find themselves drawn to her will also be the type of people that value their own sense of independence, though they will also do what’s right, even if it puts their own livelihoods at substantial risk.

Stilgar – Strong And Rational

As one of the foremost leaders of the Fremen, Stilgar is not the type of person to let sentiment get in the way of what is right for his people. The desert has forged him into a formidable leader, and so he’s the type of character that will appeal to those who base their decisions on rationality and reason rather than simple emotion.

At the same time, they will also no doubt share Stilgar’s strong sense of justice and responsibility, and once someone has earned their trust they will repay it with loyalty.

Chani – Enigmatic And Skilled

Chani is one of the most enigmatic characters in Dune, and the movie doesn’t show too much about her. However, in her few scenes she shows that she’s the kind of person that knows how to wield a weapon and isn’t afraid to do so in the defense of her people and her homeland.

Viewers who are drawn to her will probably also be somewhat enigmatic, keeping a lot about themselves secret until they start to really trust someone.

Reverend Mother Mohiam – Ruthless And Far-Seeing

The world of Dune is full of people with their own plans and motivations, many of which are complex and stretch across decades (and which are made clearer in the book). That’s definitely true of Gaius Helen Mohiam, a Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit. She is as ruthless as the Baron–with whom she forges an alliance–but she also has the ability to see just how her plans will play out.

Those who identify with her will also exhibit these traits, and they are unlikely to leave anything to chance, preferring to plan for any eventuality or mishap that might arise.

Paul Atreides – Tortured And Determined

There’s no question that Paul is the hero of this story, the young man who has to shoulder the burden of being the chosen one. Despite the heaviness of the burden, however, he proves that he is very willing to take it up, no matter the cost to himself.

Viewers who like Paul will also exhibit some of those same traits, and they will be natural leaders, even though there might be times when they recognize just how heavy the burden is that has been put on their shoulders.
