Dungeons & Dragons is filled to the brim with countless monsters that Dungeon Masters can include in their campaigns as both potential allies or as obstacles for players to overcome. It should be no surprise that as a game with “Dragons” in the title, Dragons are among the most powerful types of creatures that can be found within the multiverse of D&D.

The recently released Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a book dedicated to the Dragons of D&D, providing significant amounts of new information regarding previously existing Dragons while also adding a plethora of Dragons to the game. Of these newly added dragons, many aren’t just among the strongest of their monster type in the game, but are among the strongest monsters in the entirety of D&D. So today, we’re going to look at the newly introduced Dragons in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons and see which are the strongest!

10 Ancient Moonstone Dragon

A newly introduced species, Moonstone Dragons are whimsical Dragons native to the Feywild. As an entirely new type of dragon, Moonstone Dragons come in four forms based on their age, wyrmlings, young, adult, and ancient. Most often neutrally aligned, the ancient variant of these Dragons tote a CR of 21, these dragons have access to two potent breath weapons, one that can deal significant radiant damage and another capable of putting others to sleep.

If a player unfortunate enough to face off against a Moonstone Dragon in their lair, they can access special actions, potentially banishing a target to a dream plane, or causing them to waste their turn by dancing.

9 Ancient Sapphire Dragon

Another major new addition in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is the addition of five types of Gem dragons: Amethyst, Crystal, Emerald, Sapphire, and Topaz. Of these dragons, Sapphire Dragons are typically lawful neutral beings that are militantly opposed to aberrations.

In addition to toting a mighty thunder breath attack, this CR 22 Dragon has the ability to access useful spells such as Hold Monster, Telekinesis, and Teleport. When fought in its lair, it can stun targets, charm them, or even shape the structure of their lair at will. As if this weren’t scary enough, all Gem Dragons latently have the ability to teleport up to sixty feet as a bonus action.

8 Elder Brain Dragon

By and large the most disgusting entry on this list, an Elder Brain Dragon is a dragon of another species that forcibly had an Elder Brain integrated into its anatomy by Mind Flayers. This fundamentally warps the dragon’s abilities and puts it under the full control of the Elder Brain. With a CR of 22, this dragon is a major psychic threat, with its scariest weapon being its Tadpole Brine Breath.

Creatures unfortunately subjected to this breath weapon are infested with Mind Flayer tadpoles and dealt severe psychic damage. If these tadpoles aren’t neutralized quickly enough, a creature infested with these tadpoles undergoes a transformation into a Mind Flayer themselves.

7 Ancient Amethyst Dragon

Another Ancient Gem Dragon, Amethyst Dragons are traditionally viewed as the strongest type of Gem Dragons, similar to how Red and Gold dragons are viewed as the strongest Chromatic and Metallic dragons respectively. With a sizable spell list that includes the likes of Dispel Magic, Freedom of Movement, Globe of Invulnerability, and Plane Shift, these dragons have plenty of options in combat.

Additionally, beyond simply dealing sizable sums of force damage, if a target fails the saving throw of an Amethyst Dragon, their movement speed is reduced to zero until the dragon’s next turn, potentially resulting in a death spiral.

6 Ancient Dragon Turtle

While Dragon Turtles were already a monster in the Fifth Edition Monster Manual, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons introduces several different types, such as the incredibly dangerous Ancient Dragon Turtles. One of the scariest monsters that can be found in the sea, So large they can be mistaken for islands, these CR 24 monsters have access to a strong offense and defense. While they already have an AC of 22 and over 400 HP, if they are reduced to 0 HP, they immediately gain 350 HP, becoming even stronger through their Armor of Storms ability.

This causes creatures who deal melee damage to the Dragon Turtle to automatically suffer lightning damage. As they already have access to a highly destructive Steam Breath, adventurers should do their best to stay on the good side of an Ancient Dragon Turtle.

5 Gem Greatwyrm

While Ancient Dragons were long treated as the most powerful iteration of a given type of Dragon, Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons introduces a new tier of dragon whose power rivals that of gods themselves: Greatwyrms.

Coming in five forms (one for each type of Gem Dragon), these dragons are immune to their corresponding damage types, can cast powerful spells like Time Stop, can restrain entire armies with their Mass Telekinesis ability, and still have access to the teleportation and breath weapons one would expect from a Gem Dragon. The Icing on the Cake is that like an Ancient Dragon Turtle, if it is reduced to 0 HP, it regains much of its lost health and becomes even more dangerous than it was before.

4 Chromatic Greatwyrm

The Chromatic iteration of a Greatwyrm, these are the Greatwyrms adventurers are most likely to fight due to their evil alignment.

With similar destructive capabilities of a Gem Greatwyrm, these Greatwyrms focus less on magic and spacial manipulation and more on raw destructive power, able to dish out serious damage with its Breath, Natural bite, claws, and tail, and even magical Arcane Spears it can hurl up to 120 feet.

3 Metallic Greatwyrm

The most dangerous type of Greatwyrms are luckily the type that adventurers are the least likely to face in combat due to them being typically good-aligned.

On top of the raw power you can expect from any Greatwyrm, the breath weapons of these dragons pack additional effects on top of their damage, potentially incapacitating others for up to a minute, still imposing disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throw if the target passed the breath’s saving throw. Even if players reduce one of these dragons to 0 HP, they regain much of their HP, gaining access to a potent thunderous attack.

2 Aspect Of Tiamat

The only Dragons more potent that Greatwyrms are the aspects of the draconic gods themselves. The Aspect of Tiamat is an absolutely terrifying avatar of the five-head god of Chromatic Dragons, Tiamat herself.

Boasting a CR of 30, the Aspect of Tiamat’s damage output is absolutely absurd, possessing access to five deadly breath attacks, and devastating melee attacks. As if this weren’t dangerous enough, Tiamat is even capable of dealing sizable psychic damage by temporarily banishing a target to Avernus within the Nine Hells.

1 Aspect Of Bahamut

The only other Dragon with a CR of 30, the Aspect of Bahamut is the Avatar of the progenitor of Metallic Dragons, the Platinum Dragon Bahamut. With an overwhelmingly massive pool of health and incredible Radiant damage output, Bahamut is perhaps the most powerful ally one can have, even able to use its breath to heal others.

In addition to its stellar breath and melee options, the Aspect of Bahamut is capable of sending devastating Radiant Spears at its enemies, and keep itself safe with its Celestial Shield. Despite being an immensely powerful draconic god, Bahamut often travels in an unassuming guise such as that of a traveling monk or an elderly wizard.
