One of the few recurring elements in the Final Fantasy series that has been there since the beginning is the Ribbon, which is one of the most prized items in each game that it appears. The Ribbon offers total immunity from status effects, making it a must-have item for adventurers who are tackling end-game bosses. The functions of the Ribbon can easily be replicated as an item in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

In the Final Fantasy games, the Ribbon is usually depicted as a piece of cloth that is used to tie up long hair. There have been a few instances where the Ribbon is exclusive to female characters, like in Final Fantasy Tactics (although Cloud also had the ability to wear it, thanks to his cross-dressing experience in Final Fantasy VII), but it’s generally usable by everyone. The Ribbon is generally hidden in one of the toughest dungeons in the game or given as a reward for a dangerous quest, but it’s well worth the effort needed to acquire one.

Ribbon

Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement)

On the surface, the Ribbon appears to be little more than a length of thin red cloth. Those who cast detect magic will learn the truth, however, as the Ribbon will glow with a powerful aura of abjuration magic.

An attuned user who wears the Ribbon becomes immune to the following effects – Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Paralyzed, Petrified, and Poisoned. The user takes no damage from any poison or disease-based attacks.

The Greatest Gift An Adventurer Can Receive

The Ribbon is an extremely useful item that would be desired by every member of the party. It offers immunity to some of the most frustrating attacks in the game, and it can pretty much shut down Enchanters and spellcasters who specialize in status effects.

The Ribbon is an end-game item that is best reserved for campaigns that are drawing to a conclusion. One possible idea is to tie it into a dungeon that is rumored to have an incredibly powerful item hidden within. The party should go in expecting something flashy, only to find a single strip of cloth waiting for them in the final room. The DM could tie a backstory into how it was worn by the beloved of a powerful spellcaster, and they enchanted it to keep them safe. The lovers are long gone, but the Ribbon (and the powerful magic woven into it) still lives on in the world.
