If anyone wanted to get a Dungeons & Dragons game going, but didn’t know where to start, there is a new boxed set out today made just for them. D&D publisher, Wizards of the Coast, is making the Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit available everywhere tabletop games are sold today, September 3rd.

The new kit comes with a pared-down version of the rule set meant to streamline character creation for new players and Dungeon Masters (DM). Another addition for D&D beginners are cards describing magic items, spells, and other aspects of D&D that can be hard for newer players to keep track of on a character sheet or with note-taking. The set includes a new framework for one-on-one play meant to make D&D playable for small groups as well.

Some more standard parts of the kit include maps, DM guides for pre-made adventures including The Dragon of Icespire Peak, a DM Screen and, of course, a set of the polyhedral dice that form the basis for the random nature of D&D.

D&D has, arguably, become more popular than ever since the release of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition in 2008. The latest version of D&D recaptured many players who had abandoned the biggest name in tabletop roleplaying for games like Pathfinder that attempted to capture the feel of older versions, or for indie games like Dungeon World which adapted the fantasy setting to newer, more streamlined mechanical systems.

Now, eleven years into the lifespan of Fifth Edition D&D, this popularity means that pretty much everyone who knows how to play D&D is already is playing the game. This, in turn, causes a problem for new players of the game because of its incredibly dense mechanics which require someone experienced to show them the ropes. That someone can be difficult to find if every D&D group in your town is full. The Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit appears to be an attempt by Wizards of the Coast to address this core problem by streamlining the onboarding process in the hope that folks new to D&D can help each other learn, or at least ease the load on experienced players trying to onboard new friends.
