Dancing With The Stars contestant Cody Rigsby may have made it to the semi-finals of the competition, but he admitted that there was a moment when he thought about quitting the show after he was diagnosed with breakthrough COVID-19. Although Cody had battled COVID-19 before and then had gotten vaccinated, he tested positive after his partner, Cheryl Burke became ill with a breakthrough case. Because they could not enter the ballroom due to their illnesses, the show had to get creative in order to allow them to continue to dance.

Because Cody and Cheryl had to quarantine, they were unable to train or compete live for Weeks 2 and 3 of the competition. Instead, they turned to virtual options. In the second week, they were judged on their rehearsal footage which put them at a disadvantage. In Week 3, the odds were further stacked against them when they had to train and dance solo and virtually from their respective homes, a first for the show. Cody was determined to compete because that week the show honored the work of Britney Spears, one of his idols. Even after they returned to the ballroom, their COVID-19 symptoms lingered, causing them to struggle a bit while dancing. Despite this, Cody and Cheryl remained in the competition and beat the odds to make it to the semi-finals. They have never been in the Bottom 2 which is a true testament to how much the judges value their efforts and how much the audience is rooting for them.

According to Page Six, Cody admitted that he considered quitting the competition during this difficult time. He explained, “We definitely had a very bumpy, very rocky start to this.” Luckily, some words of wisdom from a friend made him realize that he shouldn’t give up. He shared, “I remember talking to my boss or a friend of mine and I was like, ‘Should I just quit? Should I not do it? Like, I have COVID, it’s going to be so crazy.’ She was like, ‘No, do this. It’ll feel like a memory in two weeks and you’ll get through.'” This proved to be true as Cody became stronger every week. He said that this past week he felt no stress and was very confident going into Janet Jackson Night. In fact, things went so well with his paso doble, that he earned his first 10s of the season from Carrie Ann Inaba and notoriously critical judge, Len Goodman.

Cody revealed that he is “so glad” that he stayed with the show, even though it was so hard for him to do so, saying, “I mean, it was just a thought. Those thoughts pop in your head. A part of you, the inner saboteur, is going to tell you to quit. It’s going to tell you that you can’t do it.” As a Peloton instructor, Cody’s job is to push people and inspire them to achieve new heights. He followed his own advice, stating, “You have to hold ground and push back from that ego and keep pumping.”

Fortunately for Dancing With The Stars fans, Cody did not allow himself to be defeated by his COVID-19 diagnosis. Even though he felt like quitting might be the easiest thing to do, he stayed strong and, along with Cheryl, has come back into the live competition with some of the most entertaining dances of the season. Cody’s journey is one of the most inspiring comeback stories in the history of the show.
