Judge Derek Hough has tested positive for COVID-19 one week before the Dancing With The Stars season 30 finale. The former pro dancer has been juggling a lot this season as he travels back and forth between Los Angeles to judge this year’s crop of celebrities in the ballroom and Las Vegas for his brand-new residency. Though it’s busy going back and forth, Derek previously mentioned that he loves the synergy between his two dancing projects. Derek added that his show No Limit has been sold out and is so much fun. He also doesn’t feel too much stress as it’s a short flight to travel between the cities every week, and he’s not busy learning new routines like the show’s pros and celebrities.

In terms of his future with Dancing With The Stars, Derek wants to be more involved with the show’s routines and help mentor the stars who grace the ballroom dance floor. The judge had quite an impressive run when he was a pro dancer. Derek still holds the title for the most Mirrorball Trophy wins. Though he feels lucky to return to his roots and help the next generation of pro dancers find successful from the vantage point of the judges’ panel, the former pro dancer misses the opportunity to teach the celebrities new tips and tricks to nail impressive moves.

Despite getting vaccinated, Derek revealed on Instagram that he tested positive for COVID-19 with a breakthrough case. “I just found out and I feel OK. I feel strong. I’m currently taking advice from medical professionals to get better as fast as I can. I’m currently in quarantine,” Derek told his followers. The DWTS judge added that he’ll keep his fans in the loop regarding his health in the coming days and hopes they stay safe while the pandemic lives on. Derek did not mention how his participation in the finale of Dancing With The Stars will play out but did reassure fans that his residency shows will be rescheduled for a coming date.

This isn’t the first time Derek has had to sit out of this season’s competition due to the virus. Derek was not in the ballroom last month due to a COVID-19 exposure. Though the judge ended up testing negative, producers took the better-safe-than-sorry approach in keeping the rest of their cast and crew healthy and safe. Weeks prior, pro dancer Cheryl Burke and beloved Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby were forced to compete in the comfort of their own living rooms after they both tested positive for the virus. Though the breakthrough cases hurt their overall scores, they still managed to make it to the show’s finals next week.

Though it is disappointing news, Derek seems to be in high spirits and feeling strong. Hopefully, the pro dancer continues to feel that way during his entire recovery process. ABC has yet to make a statement regarding how Derek will judge the finale of the competition.
