After giving control of Need for Speed back to Criterion Games in February of this year, EA has announced that the next entry in the series will indeed be made by the acclaimed developer. Made famous for its Burnout series, it seems EA is gearing up to finally show off what Criterion has been cooking up over the past few months. In fact, we’ll be getting our first glimpse of it during EA’s “EA Play 2020” stream on June 18.

In a post on the Need for Speed website, Criterion’s Matt Webster (general manager) wrote, “We’re focused on bringing Criterion’s unique point of view, unparalleled game feel, and high-quality innovations that will chart a new future for this wonderful series of games.”

Webster then confirmed that the next update for last year’s Need for Speed Heat will be introducing cross-play to the racer. Launching on June 9, 2020, players across each platform (PC, PS4, Xbox One) will be able to compete against one another for supremacy on the road. “We’ve always believed that games are better with friends,” Webster stated. “We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience.”

While the initial reaction to this news would be overwhelming joy, it is also a bit misleading. Criterion in 2020 is hardly the same studio it was back when 2012’s Most Wanted released. Studio heads Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry left with developer Paul Ross to create Three Fields Entertainment in 2014. Most of the team moved onto EA’s Ghost Games studio and others left to work on different projects.

I wouldn’t expect this new Need for Speed to be up to the same level of quality as previous iterations, but it has to be better than the last few installments. The biggest issue with this series is that EA has tried so many different ideas without sticking to any one formula. It’s great to see diversity in a series, but the games are never given room to really hone what works.

Even without the same team makeup, Need for Speed back with Criterion can only mean good things.
