It wasn’t clear last month what would happen to WB Games after AT&T sold off Warner Media to Discovery, but now we’re getting a hint of what’s to come. EA just announced today that it has formally acquired Playdemic, makers of Golf Clash, from former owners AT&T and WB Games.

Golf Clash is an incredibly popular casual mobile game that pits players against AI and other opponents on a virtual golf course. Players can pay to upgrade their equipment, buy special balls, or purchase cosmetics. Golf Clash has 80 million downloads globally and won a bunch of awards, including BAFTA Games Mobile Game of the Year and Mobile Games Awards Game of the Year in 2018.

Terms of the deal and its final price tag were not disclosed.

Last month, AT&T announced it would sell Warner Media to Discovery to create a new media conglomerate, but didn’t say what would happen to WB Games. Rumors had been circulating for months that WB Games would be sold off separately or it would simply remain with AT&T after being deemed “too valuable to sell.”

EA’s press release, however, answers the burning WB Games question by confirming WB Games will be sold off along with Warner Media to Discovery.

EA has been beefing up its mobile games portfolio for some time. The company acquired Glu Mobile earlier in February and announced an incoming Battlefield mobile title in April.

“Playdemic is a team of true innovators, and we’re thrilled to have them join the Electronic Arts family,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson in a statement. “In addition to the ongoing success of Golf Clash, the talent, technology, and expertise of Playdemic will be a powerful combination with our teams and IP at Electronic Arts. This is the next step building on our strategy to expand our sports portfolio and accelerate our growth in mobile to reach more players around the world with more great games and content.”

As for WB Games, Discovery will have a brand new IP when that merger goes through according to recent job listings.
