EA has teamed with Sky Sports to reveal FIFA 22’s strongest starting 11, but doesn’t seem to have taken the players’ positions into account.

The hype train for FIFA 22’s launch has almost reached top speed. The next installment in the annual football series arrives on October 1, 2021, and will bring a few new and exciting features to the virtual version of the beautiful game. Hypermotion controls for the first time ever, and the ability to create your own club from the ground up in career mode.

EA also revealed who the game’s highest-rated players will be this time around, and Lionel Messi tops the pile. Most of the other players nipping at Messi’s 93-rated heels ply their trade in the Premier League, which prompted EA to team up with Sky Sports and publish a top-rated Premier League best 11.

The talent on the pitch is unquestionable. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne, it’s a top-rated team, quite literally. However, the way some of the players have been shoehorned in just to make sure the 11 top-rated players are represented is far from ideal. N’Golo Kante set Europe alight during the Euros this year, proving he is worth every bit of that 90 rating. However, we highly doubt he’d be able to replicate that effectiveness out on the right-wing.

The back three is somewhat confusing as well. While the trio is lifted directly out of Liverpool’s defense, which makes a lot of sense, Andrew Roberston and Trent Alexander-Arnold are playing in the middle rather than out wide. Considering the attacking nature of both full-backs, it’s hard to imagine their ratings would remain at 87 if they were really forced to play right alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The 11 players above aren’t strictly the 11 highest-rated Premier League players in FIFA 22. That would have required even more shoehorning and resulted in two starting goalkeepers since Liverpool’s Alisson shares the same rating as Ederson who gets the nod. Sadio Mane is also missing despite having the same rating as Mo Salah as that would have resulted in just the two defenders starting.
