Season 8 of the Esports Championship Series began yesterday, showing some of the best North American and European CS:GO teams in action. This marks the beginning of week one of the online season, which will eventually culminate in a LAN finals. The first day of matches was disrupted after a bomb threat took over Santa Monica, California, where the ECS studio resides.

The North American games were well underway yesterday evening, as Team Liquid and eUnited took their series to a third map. ECS commentator James Bardolph announced on stream that the police were on their way to the area due to a potential bomb threat. The Santa Monica police had tweeted that there was a “suspicious package” spotted near the 3rd Street Promenade. The authorities insisted on evacuating nearby buildings to ensure safety. The tournament’s Twitch broadcast went down, and the Team Liquid vs. eUnited game continued off-stream. The broadcast went live again in time for the following match between Cloud9 and ex-Luminosity, although the game went without commentary for the first two maps.

Some ECS staff members were allowed to reenter the building while the Promenade was still closed off. James Bardolph was able to close out the final map of Cloud9 vs. ex-Luminosity as a solo commentator, while he had previously been accompanied by casting partner, Daniel “ddk” Kapadia, and former CS:GO pro, Robin “fifflaren” Johansson. Some tournament production crew members were also allowed back in the building, including observer, Connor “Sliggy” Blomfield, who continued on with production even though the studio was still closed.

The bomb squad had been called in after a “suspicious package” said to resemble a pressure cooker, had been spotted in a trash can outside an Urban Outfitters on the 3rd Street Promenade. The area was closed off and evacuated in response, as the police investigated the object. After an hours-long evacuation, the authorities found that the object posed no threat to the public. The Promenade was reopened after the police concluded their investigation.

Further ECS matches are expected to continue on as scheduled, with both the European and North American sides resuming today. Week one of Season 8 will run until September 19th.
