Elden Ring came out with considerably less marketing fanfare than some other titles that released last month (ahem, Horizon Forbidden West), but it has turned into a phenomenon, riding a wave that started when the original Demon’s Soul caused whispers about its incredibly atmosphere and idiosyncratic style all the way back in 2009.

FromSoftware’s latest entry in its Soulsborne titles has caused a critical sensation, drawing rave reviews (including us at TheGamer). But a little different from previous games, Elden Ring is also a massive commercial success for its developer. Riding the critical buzz as well as word-of-mouth, this Japanese title, with its punishing difficulty that rewards patience and fortitude, is breaking records for FromSoft and its publisher Namco Bandai. Now, it can add another: Elden Ring has become one of the biggest Steam releases ever.

PC Gamer reports that in its second weekend after launch, Elden Ring broke through to reach more than 950,000 players, reaching a peak of 953,426 concurrent players (via SteamDB). With this number of players, it’s quite likely that the game, like its console versions, has sold very well on PC –with perhaps a few to several million copies sold.

This is despite the fact that the PC version of the game is rather poorly optimised, with players running into various performance issues on the platform. With this large amount of PC players though, one hopes that FromSoftware are readying patches and updates soon to address these technical issues, which include Steam Cloud Save problems as well as complaints about the poor mouse and keyboard controls.

Elden Ring now ranks the sixth-highest on the all-time Steam DB concurrent players list, with games such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Lost Ark topping it, although the popular Lost Ark, which is free to play, has recently seen lower peak player counts than Elden Ring. CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 is just above Elden Ring on this ranking, at fifth, while it displaces Amazon’s New World to seventh.
