Ellen Pompeo, best known for her role as Meredith Grey, dedicates season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy to healthcare workers. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy debuted on ABC in 2005 and is now hailed as the longest-running medical drama in television history. Starring Pompeo, Grey’s Anatomy follows the lives, losses, and loves of the surgical team at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Earlier this year, amid coronavirus concerns, theme parks, movie theaters, and restaurants closed down, and film and television productions came to an equally abrupt halt worldwide. Forced into an early-season 16 finale – the season that bid farewell to original cast member Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) – Grey’s Anatomy featured numerous twists in the last episode that aired, called “Put on a Happy Face”. Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, Pompeo has utilized her social media outlets to encourage citizens to stay home, promote face masks, and highlight stories of nurses on the frontlines. Now, Pompeo pays a special tribute as she steps back into her scrubs.

Yesterday, production officially resumed on Grey’s Anatomy, and Pompeo took to Instagram to dedicate season 17 to healthcare workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. Flanked by her co-star Richard Flood (Dr. Cormac Hayes), Pompeo is wearing a face mask as she posts, “7,000 healthcare workers have died from COVID. I dedicate my season 17 to all who have fallen…this season is for you, with humility and a bit of humor to get us through and endless amounts of gratitude.” Check out Pompeo’s full tribute:

Reportedly, Grey’s Anatomy season 17 will incorporate the pandemic into the plotline with the premiere picking up six weeks into the global crisis. Speaking on the coronavirus storyline, showrunner Krista Vernoff admitted portraying a current medical crisis on Grey’s Anatomy is challenging and stated, “To be the biggest medical show and ignore the biggest medical story of the century felt irresponsible to the medical community.” As of this writing, ABC has yet to announce an official release date for season 17.

Clocking in over 300 episodes, Grey’s Anatomy has provided compelling storylines, while tackling topical issues. These include domestic violence, mass shootings, immigration, alcoholism, healthcare, and more. As it stands, the healthcare system continues to grapple with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy could shine a light on what the general public doesn’t see behind the scenes of a hospital, while providing a safe place for healthcare workers to feel a camaraderie. Overall, it is fitting for Pompeo to highlight healthcare workers and honor their work with season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy.
