There are rumors that Elsa Bloodstone is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and she could be the MCU’s answer to slayer Buffy Summers.

Elsa Bloodstone could be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s equivalent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. By now it’s become clear the MCU will never fully embrace the horror genre. Scott Derrickson, hired as returning director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Magic, teased that would be the MCU’s first horror movie; however, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige disagreed, and soon, Derrickson was gone.

While that may be disappointing, there’s still clear evidence the MCU is about to embrace the supernatural like never before. Marvel has signed up to Doctor Strange 2, after all, and beyond that, Mahershala Ali has been cast as Blade the Vampire Hunter. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Feige suggested this was perfect timing. “We have, for years, wanted to find a new way into Blade, we love that character. We love that world,” he observed. “Now, with Doctor Strange and the supernatural elements coming into the MCU, it felt like we could definitely start exploring that.” Marvel has subsequently confirmed a Moon Knight Disney+ series, another mystical franchise that deals with monsters, werewolves, and the like.

All this raises the possibility the MCU could embrace the character of Elsa Bloodstone. In the comics, Elsa was the daughter of the near-immortal monster hunter named Ulysses Bloodstone. She was brought up entirely unaware of her magical heritage, although she was always a top athlete with excellent reflexes. After Ulysses’ death, Elsa inherited his Bloodgem, which enhanced her physical abilities and turned her into a match for any monster she encountered. She was forced to embrace Ulysses’ legacy, taking up his career as an adventurer and monster hunter, under the guidance of his Frankensteinian servant Adam.

It’s not hard to see the similarities between Elsa Bloodstone and Buffy Summers: both are teenage girls and athletes who inherit a legacy of hunting the monsters that stalk in the shadows. Elsa’s greatest nemesis was Dracula, Lord of the Vampires, which technically means she spent most of her time hunting vampires as well. Adam is a lot darker than Rupert Giles, but he still serves the essential role of mentor, introducing Elsa to the new world of evil she has unwittingly stumbled into. Elsa’s creators insist the similarities are all just a coincidence; both writer Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning claim they hadn’t seen a full episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer before writing this series, and they resolved to steer clear while working on the book. Just as with Buffy, Elsa has found her entire family drawn into her supernatural adventures; her younger brother Cullen Bloodstone is under the influence of a demon, and increasingly appears more of a villain than a hero. He’s recently resurfaced as a problem for the X-Men, hunting down a group of mutants for sport.

There have been recurring rumors Marvel is considered introducing Elsa Bloodstone to the MCU. She’s certainly a deep cut into comic book lore, only ever starring in the occasional miniseries and instead usually appearing as an ally for a major hero in a supernatural tale. But there’s no reason she couldn’t be the MCU’s equivalent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a teenage girl who plunges into a world of action and adventure. Written well, she could serve as the audience’s viewpoint character, introducing viewers to the horrors that are being written into the broader tapestry of the MCU in the aftermath of Doctor Strange 2.
