Despite the deafening silence and rancid aromas filtering throughout that pitch-black darkness, a light at the end of the tunnel shines bright for the future of the Metro series. Among various other studios, Metro developers 4A Games has been acquired by THQ Nordic parent company, Embracer Group, for a clean $80 million from its subsidiary Saber Interactive.

As arguably one of the best survival games in the industry, 4A’s Metro series alone is enough to warrant some immense anticipation, yet with Embracer also acquiring the developer’s proprietary game engine, the sky’s the limit.

With the Metro series being published by Deep Silver, which is already under the Embracer Group umbrella, it was only a matter of time before the latter acquired 4A Games. As previously mentioned, this also gives Embracer the keys to 4A’s proprietary game engine, which will drive down a multitude of unnecessary finances for the company. In a PR statement released early Thursday morning, Embracer announced the acquisition with a seemingly loving embrace. As Saber Interactive CEO and Embracer Board Director, Matt Karch, relates:

“With the acquisition of 4A Games, Saber Interactive is locking-up one of the best indie studios in the industry with the potential and capacity to take on another AAA project and are also internalizing the value of existing and future IPs into the Group. Saber solidifies its position as a leader in the CIS and Ukrainian game developer market. Combining our technology and capabilities with 4A Games presents tremendous opportunity for growth and expansion.”

Of particular interest is the notation on “another AAA project,” which already seems like a promising investment. As for Metro specifically, the developer has some interesting plans for its flagship series going into the near-future, with 4A Games CEO, Dean Sharpe, expressing interest in potentially inviting multiplayer to the experience. In his own words, Sharpe explains: “Together we will continue to build on the Metro franchise and will focus on bringing a multiplayer experience to our fanbase.” Whatever 4A Games has in store for Metro players, it will no doubt excite the masses, as proven with the recently-released story DLC for Exodus.

Embracer has been quite busy over the past few years, with 7 other studios being recently acquired aside from 4A. In the company’s toolbox now resides 33 video game development studios, each when tallied all amount to around 170 various franchises, from their most recent payouts of Metro and New World Interactive’s Insurgency to long-cherished industry names, like Saints Row, Darksiders, and Dead Island.

Several games in the oven, not to mention even a Metro 2033 movie in development, prove that 4A Games and its beloved franchise are headed beyond the stratosphere, especially now with a valuable support backbone in Embracer. For those thus far still unacquainted with the series, both 2033 and Lost Light are available on Game Pass for PC players only.
