Kicking off the festivities of PAX Online, publisher Binary Haze is proud to reveal a new trailer for its debut title: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights. Scheduled for a winter 2020 release on PC and consoles, this trailer gives us a quick overview of the story and a sample of its soundtrack. To say the atmosphere is haunting would be putting it lightly.
In Ender Lilies, players will be tasked with exploring a supernatural world in an effort to combat a deadly curse. Assuming the role of a young girl named Lily, you’ll be the last surviving priestess that ventures out to save the land from its terrible fate. Along the way, you’ll summon the purified spirits of the undead to help you do combat with the deadly creatures of this land.
The soundtrack is being composed by Mili, a group known for its contributions to anime franchises including Goblin Slayer and Ghost in the Shell. Mili has also provided songs for some rhythm games, the least of which is the 18 tracks it contributed to DEEMO. They definitely have some experience and it comes out wonderfully in this trailer.
From the looks of things, Ender Lilies will possibly be a Metroidvania styled action game. There’s obviously going to be some comparisons to Dark Souls here, but I certainly see more Castlevania in its DNA. I’m more taken by the art direction, which bears resemblance to titles by Vanillaware. I have to wonder if its hand-drawn HD or just really high-resolution sprites.
If you’re wondering who publisher Binary Haze is, it is a company founded in June 2020 that is looking to help produce games with very atmospheric settings. Likely inspired by old-school Konami and such, there’s a bit of a horror vibe going on with Ender Lilies that certainly contributes to its foreboding presence. That soundtrack doesn’t hurt, either, filling me with dread just from the first few chords.
As for when Ender Lilies will be released, we only have the vague winter 2020 date to go off of. While confirmed for release on Steam, the console platforms are currently being figured out (likely due to Microsoft’s “surprise” announcement of the release date for the Series S and X). Ender Lilies will have support for English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), Italian, Portuguese, and Russian when it does release.
