The Eternals trailer may have revealed where Black Knight (Kit Harrington) gets his iconic sword from in the MCU. In Marvel Comics, Dane Whitman is the owner of a mystical weapon known as the Ebony Blade, a sword known for being able to cut through nearly any substance.
Marketing for the upcoming Phase 4 movie has shown off full costumes for all ten of the Eternals featured in the film, but it has offered very little details on what to expect from Harrington’s character, who isn’t traditionally associated with the Eternals. The trailer only provided a quick glimpse of him, and his Black Knight costume (assuming he has one) hasn’t been previewed, and neither has the Ebony Blade. So, for now, Dane – being the only confirmed human character without a clear connection to the Eternals – is among the movie’s biggest mysteries. How he’ll get drawn into the lives of Sersi (Gemma Chan) and the others is something Marvel is keeping under wraps, but whatever the explanation is, there’s a good chance it has something to do with the Ebony Blade.
As for what the Ebony Blade actually is in the MCU and how it gets brought into existence, the Eternals trailer may have provided a big hint. In the comic books, the sword was forged out of a meteorite that landed on Earth over a thousand years ago. The black ore it was built from was called “Starstone”. Given the alien origin of the Eternals and the fact that Black Knight will be appearing alongside them in the movie, it would seem fitting if the Ebony Blade shares its comic book counterpart’s extraterrestrial origin. It’s possible that it too will be made from an alien material – specifically, the Eternals’ spaceship.
Seen in the trailer, the spaceship the Eternals came to Earth on would make a perfect substitute for the Starstone meteorite. What ultimately became of the spaceship after it landed isn’t known, but it’s at least possible that an incident in the ancient past led to it being destroyed. If humans recovered a piece of the wreckage, it could have been transformed by a blacksmith into a powerful, unbreakable weapon. Since Black Knight’s sword is supposed to be a one-of-a-kind sword on Earth made from a mysterious material, it makes a lot of sense for it to originate from the Eternals in one way or another.
If Marvel were to adopt this origin for the Ebony Blade in Eternals, it would give viewers an adequate explanation for the sword being so powerful, but it may not shed any light on its magical properties. In the comics, the sword comes with an evil curse. If Marvel elects to give it a mystical nature, it could be that the sword will be enchanted by a sorcerer in the aftermath of its construction. Magic may not be a focal point in Eternals, but it does have a big presence in the wider MCU.
