Marvel Studios releases a new Eternals movie trailer. Officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Eternals is the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to release after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the third in Phase 4. The titular superhero group are aliens who have been living secretly on Earth for thousands of years. With Eternals set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, it follows the superheroes fighting the evil creatures called Deviants after Iron Man died and Steve Rogers retired as Captain America.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, Eternals has an ensemble cast stacked with A-list talent. Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Don Lee as Gilgamesh and Lia McHugh as Sprite were announced as part of the cast at SDCC 2019, while Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Gemma Chan as Sersi and Barry Keoghan as Druig were confirmed at D23 Expo later in the summer. With so much talent in the Eternals movie cast and behind the scenes with Zhao at the helm, the MCU film is highly anticipated despite the fact that the film is introducing a whole new roster of characters.

Now, a new Eternals trailer released by Marvel Studios reveals a fresh look at the upcoming MCU entry. The trailer reveals why the Eternals didn’t join in the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame, with Chan’s Sersi explaining they were instructed not to get involved with any human conflict unless the Deviants were there. Dane Whitman questions this reasoning, asking who gave them that order. The trailer then cuts to Eson the Searcher, a member of the Celestials from the Marvel Comics, implying he may have given the instruction. The Eternals trailer also reveals what appears to be a Deviant holding onto Thena and telling her she can’t protect any of the humans. Check out the Eternals movie trailer below.

Overall, the trailer offers some answers to questions viewers had regarding Eternals, particularly why – if they’ve been on Earth for 7,000 years protecting mankind – they never helped the Avengers in any of the superhero team’s various fights to save the world. While the answer that they were ordered not to may not be satisfactory for some, it perhaps makes the most sense. Plus, it’s possible that there’s more to the mystery of why they were given that order in the first place, as the Eternals trailer implies. Eson the Searcher may have something to do with it. The Celestial was previously shown in Guardians of the Galaxy as a being who had wielded the Power Stone, and in the comics is part of the first group to visit Earth. It’s likely that Eson has something to do with the Eternals’ being on Earth, though what exactly remains to be seen.

In terms of the movie’s main conflict, Hayek’s Ajak speaks of the emergence being triggered by the snap in Endgame that brought half the population back. Though it’s unclear what the emergence is, it’s clear that it spells doom for Earth. McHugh’s Sprite later makes a quip about the end of the world, so it appears the stakes for the Eternals is high. Still, aside from these loose story details, and the trailer establishing that the Eternals team will be reuniting for the first time in a long time, little is known about the main plot of the film. The Eternals story and plot may be further teased in future teasers and TV spots for the Marvel movie, but considering the secrecy surrounding all MCU films, it’s possible this is the most the studio will reveal before the flick hits theaters. That is, of course, if Eternals does still release in theaters only.
