Warning: contains spoilers for Batman: Urban Legends #4!

Despite what fans may think, the Suicide Squad actually works as a method for reforming villains, and heroes like Batwing are happy to admit it. Though many members of the team have no hope for redemption, one of Batman’s most savage foes claims that, thanks to his time working with Task Force X, he doesn’t want to cause any more trouble, and simply wishes for the world’s heroes to leave him in peace.

The Suicide Squad is a morally indefensible concept conceived by the twisted mind of Amanda Waller. By implanting micro-bombs into criminals’ heads, she’s managed to create a team of powerful, albeit dispensable soldiers for the US government. While the team has done a lot of good, even managing to save the world a handful of times, it’s all under threat of a violent death. By threatening to kill them for misbehaving, Waller is forcing these criminals to act out her designs rather than giving them the choice to do what’s right. In addition, the Suicide Squad is full of bad influences, meaning that every mission is spent in the company of some of DC’s worst supervillains. But even with these issues, it seems as though spending time on the Suicide Squad actually managed to reform Killer Croc.

Batman: Urban Legends #4’s ‘Superman Punch’ – from Camrus Johnson, Loyiso Mkize, Trevor Scott, Andrew Dalhouse, and Troy Peteri – focuses on Luke Fox, aka Batwing, who is taking on the Riddler. After getting past a couple of the Riddler’s traps, Batwing is attacked by Killer Croc. Initially, Luke is surprised to see that the two villains are working together, but he quickly realizes that his monstrous opponent doesn’t actually want any part in the Riddler’s schemes. While tossing Batwing around, Killer Croc explains, “I did my time with the Suicide Squad! And every time I try to get away from this $£%& — you drag me back in!” Understanding these frustrations, Luke tries to talk things through with the villain, but unfortunately, Killer Croc is too furious to listen. This forces Batwing to end the fight by delivering a devastating punch that knocks his enemy unconscious.

When Killer Croc comes to, he’s much calmer and offers to show Batwing where the Riddler is hiding out. Not wanting to solve any more riddles, Batwing agrees to Croc’s proposal and says that he’ll give Killer Croc a head start to escape if he scares the Riddler a bit. The two come to an agreement and as Croc chases the Riddler around, Batwing decides to let the big guy go free, reasoning that, “he did his time.”

While the Suicide Squad is a disturbing way to reform criminals, it was certainly effective for Killer Croc. Obviously, his time with Waller scared him straight, so much so that a hero who would usually prioritize taking him down now has enough reason to treat him with dignity and respect. Before his time with the Suicide Squad, Killer Croc was constantly going on destructive rampages throughout Gotham, but now he just wants to live in peace – strange as it may seem, Batman’s sometimes-cannibalistic villain is actually better for his service, to the extent that a hero like Batwing is comfortable allowing him to go free.
