He may be one of the longest-serving Avengers and the man who once killed the Hulk, but when Hawkeye really wants to intimidate someone, he name drops Moon Knight. The reason? Hawkeye knows that while he might not inspire fear in the hearts of criminals, Moon Knight most certainly does. It’s kind of his whole thing.

Marc Spector aka Moon Knight famously wears white because he WANTS to be seen. While patrolling the streets at night, he’s not interested in stealthily blending into the darkness like Batman or Daredevil. Moon Knight wears a stark white costume so that the bad guys will see him coming. He wants them to be afraid and see when he’s covered in the blood of others. It’s purely an intimidation tactic built on his well-earned reputation as Marvel’s most unhinged and terrifying Avenger.

Is Moon Knight really that scary though? In a word, yes. In Hawkeye: Freefall #5 by Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt and Joe Sabino, when entering his building, Hawkeye says “Hello? You really picked the wrong house to rob tonight. I hope you know who lives here. Moon Knight. Dude is going to make a bathrobe out of your skin if he catches you.” This line of dialogue highlighting Moon Knight’s violent tendencies is barely an exaggeration.

It says a lot that on a super team that has had the likes of Wolverine as a member, Moon Knight is the most violent. While he may have no super powers, there are plenty of times where he can get desperate and downright sick. While battling Bushman in Moon Knight #2 from Charlie Huston and David Finch, Spector gets thrown off a building, hits the fire escape on the way down and breaks both his legs. Even after that, their fight isn’t over. Angry that his Egyptian god of vengeance, Khonshu, has abandoned him, Moon Knight makes a final desperate attack to punish Bushman and appease his god. Using one of his crescent blades, he cuts Bushman and rips his face right off his skull.

Even when he’s attempting to be more heroic and less violent, there’s still an urge inside Marc Spector to be devastating. In Vengeance of the Moon Knight #8 from Gregg Hurwitz and Tan Eng Huat, Moon Knight experiences a type of catharsis during a fight with Deadpool. Knowing his opponent can heal, Moon Knight lets loose and cuts him into little pieces. If that weren’t scary enough, Moon Knight himself also seemingly cannot be intimidated. In the recent Punisher #14 from Matthew Rosenberg and Szymon Kudranski, Moon Knight mocks the Punisher by asking to his face, “How’s your dead family?” It’s an act of acerbic nonchalance that no one else would dare to get away with. There’s not another hero that can strike fear into the hearts of their enemies like the unpredictable and violent Moon Knight, and Hawkeye and the rest of the Avengers know it.
