Ariana Grande’s journey as an artist is a long one. From Broadway to Nickelodeon star to a bonafide pop star, she really has done it all. Her first album, Yours Truly, was an instant hit that made her a star right from the beginning.

From there, she continued to grow in both popularity and her artistry, slowly beginning to control her own career, from her image to her lyrics. As she continued to grow in that space, her albums started to take different directions. While things started very kid-friendly and clean, things shifted as she began to grow and take control of how she wanted to be perceived.

6 Yours Truly

Ariana Grande’s first album was Yours Truly, and it was sort of what you’d expect from an artist with her origins. It was very much so pop with hints of R&B and generally skewed toward the young fanbase that she had begun to grow during her time on Victorious.

While there were a ton of love-oriented songs, they were all just about love; nothing too risqué. The rest of the album was full of party songs that anyone could enjoy. Yours Truly was without a doubt Ariana Grande’s most wholesome album. There was very little that anyone could point to that wasn’t wholesome.

5 My Everything

Ariana Grande’s second album, My Everything, started to trend into more of a dangerous direction than Yours Truly. Songs such as Love me Harder and Hands on Me really indicate that she was ready to move into a more adult direction.

At the same time, she still had plenty of holdovers that could have easily featured on kid-friendly Yours Truly such as One Last Time. The lead single, Problem, as well as other singles such as Bang Bang, moved her into a more adult position that she would only continue to trend to as time went on. All-in-all, though, things were still very tame on My Everything.

4 Sweetener

One of Ariana Grande’s newer albums, sweetener, actually wasn’t too risqué in the grand scheme of things. She was an engaged woman at this point, she was very established in her life, and she knew what she wanted her art to be about.

Sweetener took Ariana into a new direction sonically, but her lyrics were a bit tamer than the album that preceded sweetener, Dangerous Woman. The album was led by no tears left to cry, which wasn’t about love or a relationship of any kind, which was something that was new for Ariana at the time. While there were certainly adult themes on the album, they took a backseat to some of the more wholesome material.

3 Thank U, Next

Following sweetener was thank u, next, the album that truly solidified Ariana as one of the most powerful pop stars of the generation. This album was a bit more adult than sweetener, but the album still didn’t rely too heavily on adult themes.

Thank u, next was made in the wake of Ariana’s very public separation from Pete Davidson and the death of her longtime boyfriend and friend Mac Miller. The album was focused on her feelings and mental state at this point in her life, and most of the adult themes that were present weren’t all too strong, and were more in the background than others.

2 Dangerous Woman

Ariana Grande’s third album Dangerous Woman was one of her more adult projects, as listeners could discern from the title. Things were more dangerous than ever here. Dangerous Woman was when Ariana really broke from her Nickelodeon origins and moved into an adult space. Songs such as the title track, Dangerous Woman, proved as much.

In addition, songs such as Side to Side with frequent collaborator Nicki Minaj are just dripping with adult themes that hadn’t been present at this point in her career. Dangerous Woman marked a turning point for Ariana Grande, even if some of the following albums were a bit less adult than this one. If her goal was to break from Nickelodeon fully with this album, she did just that, having gained a whole new older audience at the same time. This audience would follow her through her career up to her most recent studio album, positions.

1 Positions

Ariana Grande’s most recent project is positions, and it is far and away her most adult album, but also seems to be her at her most authentic self. While fans are divided on the quality of this album versus the project that preceded it, thank u, next, they can’t deny that she was very brazen with adult themes on this album, specifically sexuality.

She handles it in most of the tracks on this album, but comes at it from a position of power, harnessing it to use as she pleases. With that in mind, it does make sense that this was exactly Ariana’s goal with this album. She’s not beholden to anyone on positions. She’s singing what she wants to sing about, and everyone else better strap in and get used to it. positions might be Ariana’s most naughty album in her discography, but it is also exactly where she wants to be in her career at this point.
