Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the memoirs of Jordan Belfort, and in order to depict all the chaos from his days in Wall Street, Scorsese recruited some big names to help in either cameo or small roles. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, The Wolf of Wall Street follows his life from his days as a stockbroker to the rise and fall of his company due to fraud.
The Wolf of Wall Street was met with a lot of controversy due to its explicit sexual content, profanity, depiction of drug use, and the overall moral ambiguity of the events. Still, the film was praised by critics and viewers, especially DiCaprio’s performance, which leaned more towards comedy than drama, showing a new side of him. But amidst the parties, drugs, jokes, and frauds, there were actors in cameo roles that you probably don’t remember or might’ve missed.
Some of these actors had slightly bigger roles than the rest, and even though their appearances were brief, they all contributed to The Wolf of Wall Street’s story. Director Spike Jonze has an uncredited role as Dwayne, the broker that teaches Jordan about penny stocks early on the film. Rob Reiner’s role as Max Belfort, Jordan’s dad, is one no one could miss, as he was explosive and intense, with Jordan saying he goes on “Mad Max mode”.
Jon Favreau also has a cameo role as Manny Riskin, Jordan’s lawyer, a character based on Ira Sorkin. The real Wolf of Wall Street has a cameo appearance at the end of the film, introducing his cinematic version at his seminar. The real Jordan Belfort became a motivational speaker after serving time in prison, just like the big screen Belfort ended up hosting seminars. It’s Belfort introducing Belfort, just to make the film even more fun.
Other notable appearances are Jean Dujardin as corrupt banker Jean-Jacques Saurel, who informs the FBI about Jordan when he’s arrested. Director Martin Scorsese also has a cameo role, although a voice one, as the first client Jordan sells penny stocks to. A lot of things happen in The Wolf of Wall Street but the cameo appearances all served a purpose beyond just adding a known face for the sake of it. They all had an impact in the story, some more than others, either by making Jordan Belfort’s first sale possible, giving his name to the FBI, or adding a meta moment to the film.
