Big changes have been made to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s underground mini-game location. In the original Diamond and Pearl, the Underground was an expanse of tunnels running like a grid beneath the Sinnoh region. With the use of an Explorer Kit, players could travel underneath the region searching for rare items like fossils and evolution stones, while building secret bases to hide flags for co-op rounds of capture the flag with friends. However, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have expanded on the original concept of the Underground, introducing the Grand Underground, with new features to reinvigorate exploration in the upcoming remakes.

Originally released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl introduced numerous concepts to help expand gameplay from previous titles in the series. Returning mechanics from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, like Pokémon Contests and berry growing, were fleshed out with new gameplay in Diamond and Pearl, as well as the addition of areas like the Sinnoh Underground. The Underground seemed to be a mixture of the Secret Base mechanic from Ruby and Sapphire, and the concept of the Dive HM, which in the Hoenn region allowed players to dive under the ocean to explore underwater maps and caves for items. It was not only a fun feature during the game’s main storyline, but added post-game content, with hours of exploration possible.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have taken the foundation of Diamond and Pearl’s Underground and expanded the idea to a fully explorable world under the Sinnoh region. While the tunnels of the original Underground remain, the Grand Underground also features Pokémon Hideaways, special biomes with overworld spawning Pokémon for players to capture. These areas, which have several similarities to Sword and Shield’s Wild Areas, come in a variety of biomes and appear to spawn a variety of Pokémon based on the biome type. This is a big change from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl’s original Underground, which didn’t feature areas for players to catch or encounter wild Pokémon. Like the original Underground, it appears sections of the map are isolated from each other, requiring players to enter the Grand Underground from different areas in the above Sinnoh region.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Change Secret Bases

Secret bases will also have a new function in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Like in Diamond and Pearl, players will be able to excavate a cave and decorate it as their own personal base. However, the decorations for these bases aren’t just for aesthetics. With the use of Pokémon Statues found while digging for fossils, players will be able to change the Pokémon spawning in the Pokémon Hideaways. This will be particularly helpful for those attempting to complete their Sinnoh Pokédex, as some Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will only be obtainable inside the Pokémon Hideaways.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Expand Co-op Features

While Pokémon Diamond and Pearl had a small co-op feature allowing two players to challenge each other to capture the flag in their bases, the original games were greatly limited on multiplayer functions due to limitations of the Nintendo DS. The Pokémon series has been slow on implementing expansive multiplayer functions in the main Pokémon games, but Sword and Shield saw big changes with the addition of the Wild Area, introducing cooperative camps to make curry and a more user-friendly Global Trade System that integrated online trades into active gameplay, instead of requiring players to stay in the previous Pokémon GTS menu. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl appear to be integrating these features into the remakes, allowing players to dig together for fossils and explore the Grand Underground online with friends.

Currently, many of the features for the Grand Underground are lacking in detail, which will likely be revealed closer to the release date in November, or kept a secret until players are able to explore Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl for themselves. Because of this, it isn’t clear if the Grand Underground’s Pokémon Hideaways will include Pokémon from other regions, if other decorations besides fossils will be available for Secret Bases, or if trainers will be able to interact on a deeper level. It also remains unclear whether Mega Evolutions will be included in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but the Grand Underground seems like the perfect place to dig for Mega Stones, which could put yet another fun twist on the updated gameplay of the remakes.
