Two of the warmest family sitcoms of the 1990s were Family Matters (1989-1998) and Full House (1987-1995). Naturally, they each have their fair share of holiday episodes. Full House always offers the magic of family with its Christmas stories, and Family Matters has the distinction of airing a Christmas episode almost every season.

These beloved shows from ABC’s TGIF lineup are available to stream on Hulu. Joey on Full House will probably dress up as Santa, and Aunt Rachel and Eddie on Family Matters will most likely lead the Winslows in a classic carol. However, which of these shows had the best holiday episode?

11 Family Matters: It Came Upon A Midnight Clear (6.8)

This season eight Christmas episode of Family Matters is a typical Carl and Steve storyline, with a dash of Laura’s romantic troubles thrown in. Steve and Carl are out in the woods looking for a Christmas tree to chop down.

Naturally, they get into an argument and get stranded in the snow, where they must talk it out by the fire. Laura is pursued by two men and is again forced to think about whether she has feelings for Stefan or for someone else.

10 Family Matters: Fa La La La Laagghh! (6.8)

In season seven, Family Matters’ Christmas episode serves to continue the themes established in many other holiday stories for the Winslow family. Eddie and Laura are poor sports about the family’s Christmas traditions, and Carl isn’t too thrilled about decorating.

Steve convinces him to enter a Christmas lights contest, and fans know that this can’t be good. Carl and Steve’s efforts send them flying through the roof, all the way down to the first floor of the house.

9 Family Matters: Deck The Malls (7.1)

“Deck the Malls” is the final Family Matters Christmas episode. The Winslow home is decorated a bit more simply than it sometimes is, but it’s still a pretty scene. Richie and 3J are both living with the Winslows, so it’s a full house.

When the usual mall Santa has a heart transplant, Carl has to step in, and Laura is his helper. Steve and Myra are around the corner handling gift wrap. This is the last episode in which Jo Marie Payton played Harriette Winslow.

8 Full House: A Very Tanner Christmas (7.1)

Season six of Full House includes a sweet Christmas episode that highlights both familial love and romantic love. Steve and DJ are experiencing friction and heartbreak because Steve is considering attending college across the country in Florida. Danny is missing Vicky, who is traveling the world as a successful reporter.

Jesse has two opportunities to model the season of giving. Stephanie and Michelle are a little too obsessed with presents, so Jesse takes them to the homeless shelter to serve for the day. Later on, he surprises Becky with a faux white Christmas in the backyard since she misses Nebraska so much. Everything comes together in one big Santa finale: Joey has already pulled out his old suit, but Steve and Vicky are also dressed like Santa to surprise DJ and Danny, respectively.

7 Full House: Happy New Year (7.1)

The Full House New Year’s episode from season four fits right in with all the Christmas episodes. The Tanners still have all their Christmas decorations up, and everyone is paired off for the midnight kiss. Joey is feeling exceptionally lonely, so Danny and Jesse sign him up for a video dating service and send in a tape of him.

They watch a tape of a nice woman named Christine, and voila! Joey has a date for New Year’s. He and Christine are perfect for each other, but the woman is never seen again. The rest of the Tanners are dressed to the nines for a night of partying, and Michelle is ready to say, “Happy New Year!”

6 Full House: Arrest Ye Merry Gentlemen (7.1)

This final Christmas episode of Full House puts Michelle and Jesse in the path of a lonely shop owner named Mr. Dreghorn, played by Mickey Rooney. After helping Michelle buy Danny a Christmas present, Jesse helps Mr. Dreghorn reunite with his family.

In a strange twist of events, Joey can’t fit into his Santa suit and temporarily dresses as an Easter Bunny. It’s nice to see the Tanners gather around to sing “Deck the Halls” with their new friend, though.

5 Full House: Our Very First Christmas Show (7.2)

The second season of Full House brings the Tanners’ first official Christmas episode. Everyone is headed out of town for the holidays due to the big family reunion in Colorado.

The snowstorm complicates the flight and lands everyone at an airport for Christmas Eve night. Jesse and Becky get cozy, Stephanie struggles with her belief in Santa Claus, and the disheartened travelers have a merry Christmas after all, even the grouchy man with the 1988 laptop.

4 Family Matters: Christmas Is Where The Heart Is (7.3)

In yet another Steve and Carl adventure, this season five episode puts the two neighbors together as they wrap Christmas presents. Steve has wrapped up a twenty-pound weight for Eddie, but Carl doesn’t know what it is when he picks it up. The weight falls out of the wrapping and smashes into the fragile crystal music box Carl bought Harriette.

Steve leads Carl out of the house to buy a new gift, but they need to take the train since the snow is so heavy. When the train stops suddenly, Carl and Steve are stuck there indefinitely, but Steve does everything he can to spread the Christmas spirit. The rest of the family await Steve and Carl’s return into the night and are overjoyed to see them come home.

3 Family Matters: Miracle On Elm Street (7.4)

The season six holiday episode is quite touching. The Winslows are going through some of their clothes and belongings, and Eddie accidentally throws away Laura’s most prized doll from her childhood.

Steve searches high and low through the landfill until he finds the sentimental keepsake, showing that he loves Laura deeply. Richie sees the importance of loving others, too and he invites a homeless gentleman to the Winslows’ for Christmas.

2 Family Matters: Have Yourself A Very Winslow Christmas (7.4)

This is the first episode Family Matters did for the Christmas season. It occurs in the second season after Urkel’s prominence in the series has been established. Steve’s parents neglect him for Christmas, so he wants to hang around with the Winslows. Unfortunately, Laura becomes furious with Steve when he breaks her ornament, so he goes to his dark, cold, empty basement alone. It’s so sad watching Steve sit by his little tree and read his only Christmas card–from his allergist!

Laura realizes her wrongdoing, apologizes to Steve, and invites him to rejoin the family for the rest of Christmas. It’s also interesting to note that Carl gets stuck in a throng of jealous shoppers when he tries to buy a sought-after teddy bear.

1 Family Matters: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Urkel (8.0)

This season four story is one of the most famous and appreciated Family Matters episodes, so it truly stands out as a great Christmas special. Laura and Steve are still quite young in their complex friendship, and Laura has not learned how to treat Steve with compassion.

Laura is out Christmas shopping when Steve arrives and tries to help her get home, but he accidentally destroys the present Laura has just purchased for her mother. The scene transforms into something out of It’s a Wonderful Life, complete with an angel played by T.K. Carter. Laura becomes a female version of Steve, and Steve takes Laura’s place as one of the Winslow kids.
