For eight seasons, audiences everywhere were enamored with the Showtime series Dexter. It followed the life of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer who targeted other murderers. The early portions of the show saw him talk about how he didn’t care much for things like romance and sex. Despite that, Dexter had his fair share fo love interests throughout the entire series.

Some of these women were long-term girlfriends, others were potential flings, and some even understood his need for killing. In total, there were eight of these women who caught Dexter’s eye or vice versa. A few had the potential to be an ideal mate but others sat on the opposite end of the spectrum completely.

8 Deb

Dexter was an interesting series in that it had some incredible highs and some truly bad lows. Season six was widely panned and a major reason was this storyline. Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), Dexter’s adoptive sister, attended therapy and came to the conclusion that she was in love with him.

Clearly, audiences weren’t interested in this angle. They may not have been related by blood but Deb and Dexter were completely siblings and anything romantic between them felt forced. It was as if the show was trying too hard for something taboo. Carpenter and Hall were married in real life but nobody wanted it on-screen. Thankfully, this angle was dropped.

7 Laci

If you don’t remember who Laci (Cherilyn Wilson) is, that’s okay. She only appeared in one episode and it wasn’t all that memorable. During season six’s seventh episode, “Nebraska,” Dexter stopped at a mini-mart during a trip. That’s how he met Laci.

He began flirting with her and nearly ended up killing her at the request of the vision he had of his brother Brian (Christian Camargo). However, Dexter went a different route and had a random fling with Laci resulting in a sexual encounter in the back room.

6 Trisha

Similar to Laci, Trisha Billings (Kristen Miller) only showed up for one episode of the series. Still, she also ranks higher than Deb because pretty much anyone would be a preferred romantic partner for Dexter than his sister. Her lone appearance was in “Those Kinds of Things,” the season six premiere.

Trisha was an old classmate of Dexter’s who remembered him from biology class. The former prom queen saw him again at their high school reunion and openly flirted with him. She then took him into an empty classroom for a quick hookup that was forgotten about by the end of the installment.

5 Lila

Here’s the first real relationship for Dexter on the list. However, Lila West (Jaime Murray) wasn’t a good or sustainable partner. The two met at Narcotics Anonymous (drugs were Dexter’s cover story for killing and leaving all the time), where Lila became his sponsor.

Lila was interested in Dexter’s “darkness” and he was intrigued because nobody wanted to see that side of him before. They started an affair that caused a rift between Dexter and Rita (Julie Benz). Lila turned out to be manipulative and a psychopath who committed arson several times. One was to get Dexter to sympathize with her, another killed Sergeant Doakes, and another nearly killed Dexter, Astor, and Cody.

4 Cassie

Life would’ve been much less complicated for Dexter had he actually started dating Cassie Jollenston (Bethany Joy Lenz). A lot of fans might not fondly remember Cassie because she didn’t show up until the much-maligned final season that nobody wants to recall.

Cassie was Dexter’s neighbor and a friend to his nanny Jamie Batista (Aimee Garcia). The two seemed to hit it off when they first spoke but their later meetings were eventually a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, she went on to date Zach, who brutally murdered her.

3 Hannah

This one came from out of nowhere. Dexter slowly found out that Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) was a murderer. Once he learned it, he got her on his kill table and expected her to beg for her life. She didn’t and desire took over. Dexter cut her free and the two had a passionate session.

Debra wanted Dexter to kill Hannah for her misdeeds but he refused and the two remained together. Though they split at the end of season seven, Hannah returned in season eight. They ended up back together and by the time the series finale rolled around, Dexter left Harrison with Hannah while he went off to become a lumberjack. It certainly ended poorly but they were quite perfect for each other.

2 Rita

The woman who started it all. As soon as the series began, Rita Bennett (later Morgan) was Dexter’s girlfriend. She had a harrowing and violent past that left her uninterested in sex, which worked out well for Dexter. Eventually, that changed and the two grew closer. What started as a facade became a true relationship.

Dexter went on to legitimately love Rita and her children, Astor and Cody. He married Rita and they were mostly happy for the better part of four seasons, even having a child of their own named Harrison. Tragically, Rita was murdered by The Trinity Killer to close out season four. The only reason she doesn’t hold the top spot is that she didn’t know Dexter’s “dark passenger.”

1 Lumen

Following the death of Rita, many fans weren’t ready for another Dexter love interest. However, Lumen Pierce (Julia Stiles) turned out to be a great candidate. Her backstory is a tragic one, having been captured and repeatedly raped by the Barrel Girl Gang.

Dexter found her while searching for Boyd Fowler, a killer who was meant to dispose of Lumen’s body. Lumen and Dexter went on to partner up to eliminate the members of the gang. It was the first true case of Dexter letting a woman in on his ritual and they formed a true bond. Her random departure at the end of the season was a huge disappointment.
