The Fast & Furious franchise began rather unassumingly as a movie series focussing on street racing but steadily grew into what would eventually be one of the most significant action titles of the 21st century so far.

It wasn’t the smoothest road to success, with some of the movies being far less successful with critics and audiences than others, but there may be more praised entries in the car-centric franchise than you’d think. To create a clearer picture of the series’ journey towards box office gold, here are all of the Fast & Furious movies so far ranked by their scores on review aggregate site Metacritic.

9 2 Fast 2 Furious (38)

The first sequel in the franchise proved to be the biggest dud with critics and remains the only mainline ‘Fast Saga’ movie to not feature Vin Diesel’s character, Dominic Toretto, in any capacity.

The movie did, however, introduce Tyrese Gibson’s character, Roman Pearce, who became a mainstay of the franchise and original cast member Paul Walker manages to carry the movie solo, even if its lackluster response prompted a retooling of the franchise which would go on to ultimately save it…

8 The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (45)

Following from 2 Fast 2 Furious, Tokyo Drift moved the action primarily to the titular Japanese city whilst still keeping the focus mostly on street racing, with Lucas Black’s irresponsible fish-out-of-water taking the lead role.

The third movie was a pretty momentous shift in the development of the franchise as it was the first directed by Justin Lin, who would go on to direct the next three movies in the series with increasing success each time, and would introduce the director’s signature character, Han, who swiftly became a fan-favorite.

7 Fast & Furious (46)

Showing the slow, but steady, improvement with critics which began with the third movie, the fourth Fast & Furious installment delivered on the promise of the ending scene of Tokyo Drift, and then some, by bringing back a large majority of characters from the original movie for their most action-packed outing up to that point.

Whilst still not a hit with most critics, the fourth movie poised the franchise for its jump to real mainstream acceptance in the following sequel and beyond.

6 The Fate of the Furious (56)

The eighth Fast & Furious movie saw the franchise move beyond Paul Walker as a lead, after the actor’s tragic death a short time before the release of the seventh movie, while still focussing on the core cast that the series had assembled over the years.

Now effectively superspy heroes rather than criminals, Vin Diesel gets back to his character’s somewhat villainous roots when manipulated by a shadowy kingpin figure played by Charlize Theron, but critics were less impressed than usual by the lack of new tricks.

5 The Fast and the Furious (58)

Whilst not among the top-rated movies of the franchise, the first entry, The Fast and the Furious, struck a decent chord with both general audiences and critics.

The evident screen chemistry between leads Paul Walker and Vin Diesel provided no only the foundation of the movie over its slick street races and heists but made up the backbone of what would eventually propel the series into billion-dollar success at the box office.

4 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (60)

The first spin-off of the franchise Hobbs & Shaw saw Dwayne Johnson’s side character, Luke Hobbs, forced to team up with villain-turned-ally Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham.

The star power of the core duo, coupled with Idris Elba’s entertaining bad guy, helped the movie become one of the franchise’s bigger hits but the buddy comedy dynamic between the leads also demonstrated a surprising amount of genre versatility for the once relatively-humble crime drama title.

3 Fast & Furious 6 (61)

Redefining the main group of racers into something adjacent to superheroes, Fast & Furious 6 was, whilst still almost tame compared to some of the more recent movies in the franchise, one of the riskiest moves that the series has made so far.

Teaming up with Dwayne Johnson’s character, the thieves-turned-secret-agents are pitted against Luke Evans’ international supervillain in Europe and its score shows that many critics were just as swept up in the fun of the series as fans were by this point.

2 Fast Five (66)

The moment when the franchise truly hit its stride with both general audiences and critics, Fast Five saw an Avengers-like team-up of most of the core characters seen before in the franchise for the series’ most ambitious heist up to that point.

The real landmark decision of the movie was the introduction of Dwayne Johnson as a DSS agent hunting the protagonists down and his extra dash of supercharged machismo ensured that the series would never be the same again.

1 Furious 7 (67)

The biggest hit of the franchise yet with both audiences and critics was released in the shadow of the death of lead actor Paul Walker but it was perhaps the movie’s surprisingly deft hand in dealing with this tragedy that helped it to become the most praised installment of the series yet and its first billion-dollar success at the box office.

Furious 7 introduced Jason Statham’s character in the franchise, who would spin-off with Dwayne Johnson years later to great success in Hobbs & Shaw, in a globetrotting adventure that would definitively establish the core group of gearheads into some of the biggest action heroes of the decade.
