Nintendo just streamed their latest Direct, which focused on Indie games that are coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2018. This Direct comes hot on the heels of the recent 3DS/Mario Aces one, which dropped huge announcements like Undertale and a new Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo Switch. While the Nindies Direct wasn’t quite as sensational as the previous Direct, it did give us a glimpse at some amazing looking games that will be arriving soon on the Switch.
Mark Of The Ninja Remastered
The first game announced during the Nindies Direct was a remastered version of the stealth/platformer Mark of the Ninja. This title had previously only been released on Windows/Xbox systems, as well as mobile devices, which means that Mark of the Ninja Remastered is the series’ debut on a Nintendo console.
Fantasy Strike
Fantasy Strike is a fighting game that has been praised by critics for its deep, yet accessible combat mechanics. The game is similar to the Smash Bros. series in that the focus is on being able to perform moves with as few button commands as possible.
The Nintendo Switch version of Fantasy Strike is due out in the Summer.
Just Shapes & Beats
Just Shapes & Beats is an upcoming rhythm/puzzle game that is based on 8-bit aesthetics and chiptunes. The game features numerous colorful levels, where the player has to survive an onslaught of attacks that match the beat of the music.
Just Shapes & Beats will be debuting on the Nintendo Switch and will be released in the Summer.
Garage
One game that was briefly shown during the Nindies Direct was Garage, which is a dual-stick/top-down shooter that is based on b-movies. We didn’t get to see much of this game, though the trailer promised a mixture of tense stealth and violent action.
Garage will debut on the Nintendo Switch and is coming in the Spring.
Pool Panic
Video games based on pool & snooker have been in decline for a long time now. They used to be on the forefront of 3D simulators of real sports, but no one seems to want to play them anymore.
Adult Swim Games have decided to change this with a cartoonish game called Pool Panic, which stars a cue ball that you have to use to bash opponents and overcome obstacles in an animated world.
Pool Panic is coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2018.
Bomb Chicken
The latest platformer to come to the Nintendo Switch is Bomb Chicken. This is a game where you play as a chicken that can lay several bombs as if they were eggs. The chicken will need to do this in order to overcome obstacles in each level. It seems as if the idea behind the game was to combine the bomb-setting aspect of the Bomberman series with Mario’s level design.
Bomb Chicken will debut on the Nintendo Switch in the Summer.
Lumines Remastered
One of the biggest announcements made during the Nindies Direct involved the arrival of the Lumines series to Nintendo consoles. Lumines was one of the launch titles for the PlayStation Portable and may be one of the best launch titles of all time. Lumines is a rhythm/puzzle game that is similar to titles like Tetris. Lumines Remastered is due to arrive on the Switch in Spring.
Reigns & Reigns: Her Majesty
There are many games that involve playing as a medieval king who must build castles and lead armies to victory. The Reigns series brings the idea down to basics, as you only have to make decisions based on the information that is given to you and live with the consequences of your choices. Reigns and Reigns: Her Majesty are coming to the Nintendo Switch in Spring.
Light Fall
The most impressive looking title shown during the Nindies Direct was Light Fall. This is a fast-paced action game that combines the beautiful aesthetic of games like Limbo with the precision multiple jumping of Celeste. This game has already been announced for a March release on Steam and the Nintendo Switch version has a Spring release, which suggests that it will come out around the same time.
West Of Loathing
West of Loathing is a spinoff of Kingdom of Loathing. It is an adventure/RPG that is set within a western that is staffed entirely by stick-figure people. West of Loathing is intended to be a comedy game and promises lots of laughs when it is released in the Spring.
Pode
Pode is an upcoming puzzle/platformer that is set inside a mountain. The stars of Pode are a rock and a ball of light. One of the selling points of the game is that it has a co-op mode that can be enjoyed by using both Joy-Cons. Pode is due to arrive on the Nintendo Switch this Spring.
The Messenger
The Messenger is an upcoming indie action/platformer that is heavily inspired by the Ninja Gaiden series. The game uses an 8-bit aesthetic, though one of the new features announced for the game is the ability to shift the graphics into a 16-bit style.
The Messenger is due to arrive on the Nintendo Switch this Summer.
Bad North
Bad North is an upcoming tower defense/strategy/roguelike where you play as the commander of a small force of troops that have to defend against invading armies of seafaring Vikings. The game is all about managing your army and keeping your commanders alive, as they will perish for good if they fall in battle.
Bad North will debut on the Nintendo Switch and is coming this Summer.
The Banner Saga Trilogy
The final game announced during the Nindies Direct was the upcoming third game in the Banner Saga trilogy. This is a series of tactical RPGs that are based on Norse mythology and are infamous for the tough decision you have to make throughout the games.
The upcoming Banner Saga 3 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the Summer, which ports of Banner Saga and Banner Saga 2 will also be coming soon to the system.
