Everyone who’s played through Grand Theft Auto 4 will remember Niko Bellic’s annoying cousin Roman constantly calling him to go bowl with him. The interaction spawned several memes and helped turn Roman into one of GTA’s more infamous characters. And, while the playerbase’s dislike of Roman’s incessant calls is justified, the actual mini-game is far from the worst in Grand Theft Auto’s long history.

Even within Grand Theft Auto 4’s DLC, players can find a worse mini-game. The champagne drinking contest in The Ballad of Gay Tony is incredibly simplistic, asking the players to follow some simple QTEs to complete it. Bowling, at the very least, has actual mechanics. Rockstar Games has done quite a few of these QTE-based mini-games that just aren’t very fun. Other examples include the Lowrider Challenge in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and yoga in Grand Theft Auto 5. These challenges lack Roman’s aggravating calls, but playing their respective mini-games is not nearly as fun as hitting the lanes.

Another contender for the worst GTA mini-game is the collection of arcade games Rockstar put into San Andreas. Those games do a decent job of emulating old arcade classics, but they’re very one-note, which leads to them getting boring quickly. Unlike the newer arcade games in Grand Theft Auto Online, there really isn’t a reason to play games like Go Go Space Monkey, Duality, or They Crawled from Uranus more than once.

What Are The Worst Mini-Games In Grand Theft Auto

Past that, there is both basketball in San Andreas and Keepie-Uppy Beach Ball in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. To Rockstar’s credit, neither game is a true mini-game in that they feel more like random side activities. Players can track their progress, but neither game is fleshed out in any real way. Instead, it feels like Rockstar had ideas for something larger and then scrapped it during development.

The worst mini-game of the franchise though has to the Beefy Baron in San Andreas. To even unlock this mini-game, players need to first finish all three of Zero’s remote-controlled vehicle quests, which are already regarded as some of the most frustrating quests Rockstar has ever made. After that slog, the game gives the option to go back and essentially replay the second mission where CJ needs to control an RC plane and murder Berkley’s delivery vans. The idea that anyone would want to submit themselves to that quest again is baffling. Fortunately, Rockstar doesn’t require this mini-game for 100% completion, so it’s safely skipped. That does not, however, make it a Grand Theft Auto mini-game anyone should consider playing.
