The original Home Alone is considered one of the best Christmas movies of all time. It is an absolute classic, and it is always playing on TV during the holiday season. The Macaulay Culkin-led film led to a sequel that is almost just as popular as the original, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

However, these are not the only two installments in the franchise. Some were made without the stars of the first two. Very few people remember these sequels, and they all vary in quality. They all still take place during the Christmas season, so they may be worth the watch for those who have not seen them. IMDb ratings offer up an interesting way to see how they all rank against each other.

5 Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House (2002) – 2.6

This was the first made-for-TV movie in the franchise. Unlike the previous film, Home Alone 3, this brings back the characters from the first two movies. However, they are all played by different actors. It still takes place during the Christmas holidays, and the events occur soon after the events of the first two films. When his parents plan to get a divorce, Kevin stays at his future stepmother’s big house where his old rival, Marv, along with his wife decide to break in.

For a TV movie, it is not a bad film. It has its good moments, and the slapstick antics in the film are fun to watch for all fans of the franchise. One cannot help but miss the original cast, though. This cast tries to capture some of the magic of the original, but it falls flat most of the time.

4 Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012) – 3.5

This is currently the last film in the franchise. Just like with Home Alone 3, this does not involve Kevin McCallister. It involves a different kid named Finn Baxter who must protect his house from a group of thieves hoping to steal a valuable painting in the house.

The film tries to follow the formula that started with the first installment that made it so famous: thieves break into a house only for a kid to take matters into his own hands in order to protect it. For the most part, everything falls flat and does not have the same heart and fun as the original. There are a few funny moments in the film, but it definitely does not have the same level of laughs as the other movies.

3 Home Alone 3 (1997) – 4.5

This is the last theatrical film in the franchise and the first to include characters that are not in the first two movies. When young Alex receives a remote-controlled toy car containing an important microchip, a group of terrorists tries to get it back. However, Alex has some tricks up his sleeve that resemble the antics Kevin McCallister performed in the first two movies.

This is the movie in the franchise where everything starts to go downhill. One cannot help but miss the McCallister family and the lovable bandits. The movie itself is still pretty fun, and the Christmas atmosphere is still apparent. However, it does not fully capture the magic of the first two movies that made them such Christmas classics. However, a young Scarlett Johansson is notable to spot as Alex’s older sister.

2 Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (1992) – 6.8

This movie is almost just as good as the original film. When Kevin McCallister gets on the wrong plane, he ends up in New York where he stays at a fancy hotel and comes across the bandits from the original film. Like almost every sequel in a franchise, this uses a similar formula as the original and makes it even bigger.

Instead of being alone in his own house, Kevin is in a big city he is not familiar with. The performances are still great from all the leads, and the supporting cast is wonderful as well, especially Tim Curry. It is a wonderful Christmas movie that proves that some sequels really can be on par with the original. It is a favorite among many Christmas movie lovers during the holiday season.

1 Home Alone (1990) – 7.6

This just may be the ultimate Christmas classic. Directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, this was already in good hands from the very beginning. Macaulay Culkin shines as Kevin McCallister, a young kid left home alone during the holidays who must defend his house from the “wet bandits.”

Culkin gives a wonderful performance as the lead, as well as the performances by Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Catherine O’Hara, and a small supporting role by John Candy. John Williams, known for scoring many popular films including Jaws, Star Wars, and Jurassic Park, composed wonderful music for this film, including the theme song, “Somewhere In My Memory.” This is the highest-grossing Christmas movie, and it deserves all the recognition and love it has received over the years. It is a must-watch for all viewers during the Christmas season.
