Every New Pokémon & Regional Variant Introduced in Pokémon Legends Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in the Hisui Region, a land from long ago where people and Pokémon still live separately. The player is tasked with completing the first-ever Regional Pokédex by catching every Pokémon in the Hisui Region, which will eventually come to be known as Sinnoh.

Releasing close to the Generation IV remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action RPG that tasks the player with researching Pokémon. However, in addition to old favorites from past games, Hisui will add several new regional variants and evolutions of previous Pokémon. Here are all of the new Pokémon revealed for the game so far.

Wyrdeer

Wyrdeer, classified as the Big Horn Pokémon, evolves from Stantler, the deer Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver. It is a Normal/Psychic-type Pokémon, “using the black orbs at the bases of its antlers,” can “generate and unleash psychic energy powerful enough to distort space.” It sports a long beard in the style of a Ghibli forest spirit or Breath of the Wild’s King of the Mountain.

Stantler can evolve in Hisui due to its harsh, mountainous environment. Because Hisui is a place where Pokémon and people seldom coexist, Wyrdeer is an outlier in its deep connection with the humans. They are revered by locals, and their thick fur is said to be useful for creating warm and luxurious clothing. Additionally, players will be allowed to ride on the back of this Pokémon to travel quickly across the wilderness.

Basculegion

Basculegion is categorized as the Big Fish Pokémon and evolves from Basculin, which debuted in Pokémon Black and White. Basculin evolves in the Hisui Region by being “possessed by the restless souls of other Basculin in their school that have perished during their journey upstream,” giving it a Water/Ghost typing. These souls also empower the Pokémon, allowing them to swim without tiring and carry the player across bodies of water.

In addition to a new type, Basculegion receives a much larger form complete with a long, wispy tail similar in style to traditional Japanese artwork. In its original game, Basculin comes in two forms: Red-Striped, more predominant in Black, and Blue-Striped, more common to White. Basculegion appears to be an evolution of the Red-Striped Form, and a Blue-Striped version has not been revealed.

Hisuian Braviary

Classified as the Battle Cry Pokémon, the Hisuian variant of Braviary comes to the region in the winter and “can imbue its eerie screeches with psychic power to generate powerful shock waves.” With its Psychic/Flying typing, it can also “sharpen its sixth sense, entering a trance that boosts its physical abilities.” It resembles the original Braviary design with the exception of a large, psychic flame on its brow that resembles a masquerade mask.

Players can use Hisuian Braviary to fly across the region using a hang-glider-like basket and grip. While it is currently unconfirmed whether Braviary’s pre-evolution Rufflet will also receive a regional variant, it’s likely Unovan Rufflet will simply evolve into Hisuian Braviary in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Hisuian Growlithe

Classified as the Scout Pokémon, Hisuian Growlithe are “highly vigilant,” and “they tend to be seen watching over their territory in pairs.” Their long, voluminous fur acts as a perfect insulator, allowing them to stay energetic even in Hisui’s harsh climate. They are Fire/Rock-type Pokémon, and the wart on their head is actually a small, fragile stone that they use to attack in moments of desperation.

Currently, no Hisuian form of Arcanine (or a new evolution for Hisuian Growlithe) has been announced, though it’s likely the Kanto Pokémon will receive a new variant, a branched evolution or a third form. Kantoian Growlithe evolves using a Fire Stone, but its Hisuian form could use another method.

Kleavor

Kleavor, the Axe Pokémon, evolves from Scyther due to “special minerals found in the Hisui region.” A Bug/Rock-type, Kleavor hardens parts of its body into stones, which “often get chipped during fierce battles.” The more battles a Kleavor has endured, the more marked and chipped their body will become, and it is said that Hisuian people used parts of its body to craft tools in ancient times.

Seemingly serving as a replacement for Scizor, Scyther’s Bug/Steel evolution introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, Kleavor wields large stone axeheads on the ends of each of its hands. One of Hisui’s “Noble Pokémon” is a Kleavor that acts as the guardian of the woods, defending it from those who would seek to violate or trespass upon it.

Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark

The Hisuian regional variants of Zorua and Zoroark, which originally debuted in Pokémon Black and White, are similar in shape to their original Unovan forms, though they trade mainly black fur for white and blue eyes for yellow ones. Zorua is a small, fox-like creature with fluffy fur on its neck and around its back. Additionally, it seems to have a more timid disposition than its Unovan counterpart, which had more of an impish personality.

As for its evolved form, Hisuian Zoroark is a tall, bipedal fox Pokémon with fluffy white fur that grows especially puffy on top of its head, where it hangs over toward its face like a cloud. It sports the same pink and red highlights as Hisuian Zorua, along with red “eyeliner-like” markings around its yellow eyes. This new Zoroark seems to have the ability to transform into a cloud of black smoke to attack or scare creatures that get too close to Hisuian Zorua, indicating a similar protective nature towards its kin that its Unovan counterpart also possesses.

It’s currently unknown if Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark will have the same illusion abilities as its original form, but the two will be Normal/Ghost-types — a first for the franchise. This combination gives the duo immunity to three different attack types (Normal, Ghost and Fighting), two resistances (Poison and Bug) and just one weakness to Dark-type moves, making it a great defensive typing.

Hisuian Voltorb

Classified as the Sphere Pokémon, Hisuian Voltorb is described as “enigmatic,” and said to be “always in high spirits” with “a friendly personality.” Similar to its first-generation counterpart, Hisuian Voltorb resembles a large Poké Ball with eyes. However, because Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in the distant past, the Poké Balls are quiet different from the ones fans are used to, so this version of Voltorb has a “wood-grain” texture and a large hole in its head.

Through this hole, Hisuian Voltorb often discharges electricity or seeds when it gets excited, meaning accidentally being shocked by a Voltorb is a somewhat common problem in Hisui. This variant is Electric/Grass-type, as opposed to the Kantoian version’s singular Electric typing. Aside from Mow Form Rotom, this is the first Pokémon to have this type combination. It is currently unknown whether Voltorb’s evolution, Electrode, will also receive a regional variant, if it will be replaced entirely or if Hisuian Voltorb will be unable to evolve.
