Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

Legendary Trios are a staple in the Pokémon franchise. Legendary Pokémon have come in groups of three ever since Generation I, to the delight of fans who love the franchise’s lore. These trios are among the most powerful and elusive Pokémon in any game and generation and represent their region’s myth and symbolism.

Even though they are all a vital part of the series, there’s no denying that some outrank others. Some trios have more intriguing lore or feature more prominently in the games; some have more importance in the Pokémon world, and others have better designs. Every fan has their favorite trio, but only one can be the best of them all.

9 Forces Of Nature

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

The Forces of Nature are among the most despised Pokémon in the franchise. Most fans dislike mons that look too human, and these genies are the very definition of human-like Pokémon. Introduced in Generation V, the Forces of Nature are an all-male trio comprised of Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus, who serves as Trio Master.

Like most Trios in Pokémon, the myth around these genies features two of them, Tornadus and Thundurus, fighting and ravaging the land. Landorus stops the conflict, and the thankful citizens from Unova build a shrine in his honor. The genies have an alternate form known as Therian. Under this form, they look more animalistic, but their design remains unappealing. As such, these genies are one of the reasons why Gen V gets such a bad rep.

8 Lake Trio

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

The Lake Guardians–Uxie, Mezprit, and Azelf–have the misfortune of sharing their region with another mightier Trio. As such, they can sometimes get lost among the region’s overwhelming lore. These three innocent beings are among the most wholesome Pokémon ever and represent three primordial qualities of being. Uxie stands for knowledge, Mezprit for emotion, and Azelf for willpower.

Thanks to their frail and pastel-colored designs, the Lake Guardians are memorable enough. However, they play no prominent role in the Generation IV games and usually get confined to their respective lakes. Furthermore, they don’t particularly excel in battle, and most players catch them only to complete their regional dex.

7 Aura Trio

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

In theory, Xerneas and Yvelthal are intriguing. The idea of creation and destruction is a compelling one, and their designs certainly do them justice. However, the execution was a tad underwhelming. Pokémon X & Y aren’t bad games at all, but they are among the safest in the franchise.

Then there’s Zygarde, arguably the most forgettable out of all the Legendary Pokémon. It never got the chance to become a game mascot and hardly played any role in X & Y. Zygarde did receive two extra forms in Sun & Moon, but they came one generation too late. The Aura Trio feels incomplete in Generation VI, instantly putting it at a disadvantage compared to other trios. A shame because their designs and type combinations are among the franchise’s best.

6 Legendary Birds

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

As the first trio in the franchise, the Legendary Birds are among the most iconic Pokémon from Generation I. Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos laid the foundation for future trios in terms of type combinations, lore, and dynamic. They fight each other whenever they meet and will only calm down with Lugia’s intervention.

Like other non-mascot trios, the birds play no prominent role in the Kanto games. However, fans still like to catch them for several reasons. Nostalgia plays a crucial role in their popularity, and their prominent role in the beloved Pokémon movie The Power of One also helps. Furthermore, the birds’ designs make them look like the most regal and mighty of all Kantonian Pokémon.

5 Legendary Beasts

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

In terms of lore, the Legendary Beasts from Johto have one of the best. They used to be regular Pokémon who unfortunately perished when Ecruteak City’s Brass Tower caught fire. Ho-Oh brought them back as mighty beasts, with each one representing one of the tragedy’s elements: Raikou represents the lightning that struck the tower, Entei the fire that destroyed it, and Suicune the rain that eventually ended the event.

Their origin would make for an excellent game in the Pokémon Legends series. Indeed, these beasts have all the appeal to become game mascots. Their design is impressive, conveying every bit of their raw and fierce power. Lugia and Ho-Oh might be Johto’s titular Legendaries, but the beasts more than hold their own.

4 Light Trio

The Generation VII trio balances intriguing concepts with truly impressive Pokémon design. Their group dynamic is also one of the most confrontational in the games. Solgaleo and Lunala represent the light from the sun and moon, respectively, and Necrozma acts as a thief wanting to steal it.

The Light Trio is also at the center of one of Pokémon’s most ambitious concepts. Many fans found Ultra Space a tad confusing and out of place in the franchise, but no one could deny its originality. Pokémon could’ve done so much more with this trio, and it’s a shame that fans only got them for a single generation. Still, the games used them to the fullest, which is more than other trios can say.

3 Tao Trio

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

Unova might’ve been a divisive region, but practically no one could deny that its lore is among the franchise’s best. The tao trio of Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem takes heavy inspiration from ancient Chinese philosophy. Reshiram represents the concept of yang and controls fire, while Zekrom embodies yang and commands thunder. As for Kyurem, it depicts wuji, the absence of yin and yang, and controls Ice.

Furthermore, the Tao Trio features arguably the most compelling backstory in the franchise. Reshiram and Zekrom were once a singular being that divided because of a war between two brothers. In fact, the myth is so beloved that many fans would love to see the Original Unova Dragon staring in the next Pokémon Legends game.

2 The Super-Ancient Pokémon

Every Pokémon Legendary Trio Ranked

Generation III began exploring the creation of the Pokémon world, and the Super Ancient Pokémon played a prominent role in it. Also known as the Weather Trio by fans, the Super Ancient Pokémon–Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza–each has control over one of the Earth’s layers. Kyogre controls the hydrosphere, Groudon the lithosphere, and Rayquaza the atmosphere.

Kyogre and Groudon are also sworn enemies, and their conflict has the power to destroy the entire world. Only Rayquaza can end their battle, making it the Trio Master. The Super Ancient Pokémon are the first Trio to be game mascots and actively participate in their generation’s games. They are among the most influential Pokémon of all time, beings so mighty that they escape human comprehension. In many ways, the Super Ancient Pokémon consolidated the term “Legendary Trio,” laying the foundation for the ones that would come next.

1 Creation Trio

When it comes to Legendary Trios, none beat Sinnoh’s reigning legends. Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are the reason why the Pokémon world exists. They each represent a primordial extent of existence and have control over their own dimensions. Dialga presides over time, and Palkia controls space, two aspects of any four-dimensional universe. Giratina commands anti-matter and rules the Distortion World, where the rules of physics don’t apply.

The Creation Trio represents the franchise’s willingness to explore more complex subjects. In terms of lore, they are the makers of the universe, direct descendants of the God of Pokémon, Arceus. The Creation Trio balances thought-provoking ideas with inspired designs, making them the undisputed kings of all Legendary Trios. They are literally Pokémon Gods, and fans can’t wait to revisit them in the upcoming Gen IV remakes, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
