Quentin Tarantino’s movie universe is divided in two levels: the stories set in the “real world”, and the movies the characters watch in that world. The characters from one level can’t appear in the other, but that doesn’t apply to products, which is why the fictional brand of Red Apple cigarettes can be found in many Tarantino movies from both levels, as well as in From Dusk Till Dawn, Four Rooms, Planet Terror, and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

Tarantino has been building his own movie universe since Reservoir Dogs came out in 1992, and so far it’s formed by 13 movies, including Tony Scott’s True Romance, Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn, and Death Proof’s Grindhouse sibling Planet Terror. Many of these movies have connections with others, whether through characters (like the Vega brothers) or products, like Big Kahuna burgers and Red Apple cigarettes.

This cigarette brand has appeared in several Tarantino movies, whether in dialogue, advertisements, or hidden in the pocket of a character. Red Apple cigarettes packages are very peculiar: they are yellow and feature a green worm with a male face, crawling out of a big red apple. This brand has appeared in a total of 10 films, including two that were not directed by Tarantino.

Red Apple’s debut was in Pulp Fiction, where a pack can be seen in Honey Bunny and Pumpkin’s table, and it’s also Mia Wallace’s brand of choice. Red Apple also had a place in Tarantino’s segment in the anthology comedy movie Four Rooms, where it can be seen next to an ashtray, and in From Dusk Till Dawn, where Tarantino’s character takes a Red Apple cigarette while in the car. The brand then jumped to a different universe and popped up in David Mirkin’s comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, where an ad can be seen in the background, though the artwork is different as the worm is wrapped around the pack.

Back to Tarantino’s movie universe, in Kill Bill: Volume 1, a Red Apple billboard appears at the Tokyo Airport, with Julie Dreyfus (who plays Sofie Fatale in the movie) as the model. Death Proof also had its dose of in-universe product placement thanks to a gas station selling Red Apple cigarettes, and a pack also showed up briefly in Planet Terror. Inglourious Basterds has a very, very subtle and hidden reference to the brand, as the upper part of a pack can be seen in the front pocket of one of the Basterds’ jackets.

Red Apple cigarettes have been around for years – at least within Tarantino’s universe, as they appear in The Hateful Eight, in a vintage package to better suit the setting. Finally, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood had the most shameless reference to the brand. Aside from Cliff Booth smoking Red Apple cigarettes and an ad seen on a bus billboard, Rick Dalton stars in a commercial for the brand in an end credits scene, and is the only character to express that he finds them disgusting.
