The Midnight Mass soundtrack contains some famous rock songs that play throughout the early episodes, but those are then replaced by hymns. Quite a bit changes as Midnight Mass’ story develops, from character traits to the overall direction of the series. Much of those changes become obvious as time goes on, but one of the things that helps support the themes around the show is the fact that the music is altered as well.
Midnight Mass comes from horror mastermind Mike Flanagan, who previously worked with Netflix on a handful of movies as well as two incredibly popular TV shows, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Now he’s back with a third show that is perhaps his most personal one yet – Midnight Mass. Flanagan had been wanting to develop Midnight Mass into something – a movie, TV show, or book – for several years, even going as far as to add the story in as an Easter egg in two of his past movies. Thankfully, it finally got made, and is now a Netflix series.
However, compared to the average Netflix show, Midnight Mass doesn’t use too many songs, but the ones that it does have, play prominently and often speak volumes about what’s happening in those scenes. But over time, as things take a turn for the worse, those jovial songs are replaced by solemn hymns that also tie into the current story developments. Episode 1: And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind, by Neil Diamond – At the start of the series, as Riley watches the medics try to revive the girl.
Episode 1: Soolamon, by Neil Diamond – As Warren is riding his bike to meet up with his friends.
Episode 1: Abide With Me! Fast Falls The Eventide (hymn) – When Ed Flynn speaks to Riley after dinner, and Sheriff Hassan and his son Ali are praying.
Episode 2: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty (hymn) – When Riley is in AA and Father Paul is conducting daily mass.
Episode 2: Saturday Morning, by Harry Chapin – When Annie pricks herself and looks at her blurry finger, realizing she doesn’t need glasses anymore.
Episode 2: Democracy, by Leonard Cohen – At the end of mass and the beginning of the Crock Pot Luck.
Episode 2: Lead Kindly Light (hymn) – As Pike the dog dies, Riley asks to work on the boat, and Leeza goes to daily mass.

Episode 5: O Sons and Daughters, Let Us Sing! (hymn) – When Riley leaves the rec center after being turned into a vampire.
Episode 6: Hark! The Loud Celestial (hymn) – When the townspeople walk at night with candles towards the church, singing.
Episode 7: Nearer, My God, to Thee (hymn) – The townspeople sing as the sun comes up and the series ends.
