Not all of the characters on Barry Allen’s team have survived the events of The Flash. Though not a show that’s as dark as Arrow, The Flash’s Barry Allen has had to endure several tragedies, some of which being the deaths of his closest allies.

For the most part, The Flash has maintained a core group of heroes. Ever since the beginning of season 1, Barry has been assisted by people who work at S.T.A.R. Labs. Barry’s group – which has been nicknamed “Team Flash” – has gone through a number of changes over the years, but some of its members have remained constant. Both Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdez) and Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) are with him season after season, helping him take down every major threat that’s he faced. The team also has a tendency to go through various versions of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), with each season typically replacing him with a new Wells (though this formula may have been scrapped by Crisis on Infinite Earths).

Team Flash has always featured a diverse cast of characters in terms of what they bring to the table. Not all are capable scientists like Caitlin and Cisco. Some, like Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Iris (Candice Patton), can contribute by providing valuable advice and support. Also, Barry isn’t the only superhero on the team. In season 1, he had to do most of the action alone, but it hasn’t been that way for a long time. When Barry is out in the field, he’s often aided by other superpowered characters, such as Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale) and Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer). Unfortunately, some Team Flash members haven’t made it through every conflict. Here’s every character on the team who died, and what happened to them.

Reverse-Flash

The original leader of the team in The Flash season 1 was Harrison Wells – or at least, that’s who they thought he was. The wheelchair-bound scientist who guided Barry into mastering many of his speedster abilities turned out to be Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash. It was revealed that Barry’s greatest enemy from the future came to the present and stole the identity of the real Harrison Wells. His speed made defeating him quite a challenge for Barry, as he was even faster than the Scarlet Speedster himself. He finally met his end in the season 1 finale when his ancestor, Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), killed himself, effectively erasing Thawne from existence. Reverse-Flash has since returned to be a thorn in Barry’s side, but the character he had to contend with in seasons 5 and 6 is believed to be a different version of the villain. The season 1 Reverse-Flash is currently dead.

Ronnie Raymond & Martin Stein

In the second half of season 1, Barry met Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), Caitlin’s supposedly deceased fiancé. Apparently, Ronnie and scientist Martin Stein (Victor Garber) merged into one body to form the nuclear-powered metahuman, Firestorm. Though not full-time Team Flash members, Ronnie and Martin were key allies early in the series. Ronnie gave his life in the season 2 premiere to stop a singularity from enveloping Central City. Long after leaving Team Flash for good and joining the Legends, Martin died in the Arrowverse crossover, Crisis on Earth-X, after being shot by Nazis. After being mortally wounded, Martin survived long enough to activate a device that was crucial to their victory over the villains.

Zoom

Reverse-Flash was the first, but not the only, traitor on Barry’s team in The Flash. In season 2, there was Zoom (Teddy Sears), who infiltrated the group by posing as speedster Jay Garrick. He evolved into a love interest for Caitlin and became a part of Barry’s inner circle of allies. Despite the fact that The Flash had already pulled this trick in the previous season, Jay was even able to gain the trust of the viewers simply by using the name of a popular Golden Age superhero from DC Comics. Later in the season, he became Barry’s second mentor to stand revealed as a villain. In the final battle in the season 2 finale, Time Wraiths emerged from the Speed Force and attacked him. Following his death, he returned as the undead, zombie-like speedster villain, Black Flash.

Jesse Quick

Jesse Quick (Violett Beane), the daughter of Earth-2’s Harrison “Harry” Wells, became a valued member of the team in The Flash season 3 after developing the powers of a speedster. Like Wally, Jesse used her speed to help Barry catch metahuman criminals. At the end of the season, she parted ways with Barry’s group and eventually formed her own team of heroes on Earth-2. Though she had managed to survive everything that they went through together on The Flash, she was seemingly killed offscreen in the Arrow season 8 premiere when Earth-2 was obliterated by an anti-matter wave in the lead-up to the Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Harry survived due to having his consciousness merge with all the other Wells in the mind of Nash, but it appears that Jesse wasn’t as fortunate. Of course, The Flash could find a way to bring her back, but until the show confirms otherwise, Jesse Quick is presumed dead in the Arrowverse.

H.R. Wells

In The Flash season 3, the team’s resident Harrison Wells was H.R., a version of the character who didn’t have an obvious skillset that made him essential to the team. H.R., who didn’t have the natural intelligence of Eobard Thawne or Harry, had to earn his spot on Team Flash through his creative ideas. At the end of season 3, H.R.’s story reached a tragic end when he used a device to switch places with Iris. H.R. was killed by Savitar. It was through H.R.’s sacrifice that they were able to save Iris from her fate, as it was said for multiple episodes that she would die at Savitar’s hand.

Nora West-Allen

In The Flash season 5, Barry received a new speedster ally in the form of Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy). Known by the superhero codename “X.S.” Nora was the future daughter of Barry and Iris and a character with a secret connection to Reverse-Flash. Once their relationship between them was exposed, Barry angrily kicked her off the team, but eventually forgave her for betraying their trust. However, Nora’s stay with the team didn’t extend beyond season 5. As it turned out, defeating Cicada came with a heavy cost. Their efforts to destroy the future villain’s dagger had unexpected consequences for Barry’s daughter. By changing Cicada’s future, they created a new timeline, one where The Flash’s version of Nora didn’t exist. As a result, Nora faded out of existence — not technically a death, but for her helpless father watching it happen, it would have felt that way.
