Tommy Doyle went through a nightmarish Halloween in 1978 alongside Laurie Strode and Lindsey Wallace in John Carpenter’s Halloween, but that wasn’t the only time he was seen in the franchise. The slasher genre went through a great run in the 1980s, and it has a lot to thank John Carpenter for, whose 1978 movie Halloween played a big role in developing the genre. Although Halloween wasn’t well-received upon its initial release, time has been good to it and it’s now considered one of the best horror movies ever, and it helped popularize the slasher genre in the 1980s.
Halloween tells the story of Michael Myers, who on Halloween night 1963 killed his older sister, and he was just six years old. Michael was sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, where he stayed for over a decade and never said a word, which caught the attention of many psychiatrists and other specialists, mostly that of Dr. Samuel Loomis (Donald Pleasence). Fifteen years later, in 1978, Michael escaped and returned to his hometown Haddonfield, Illinois, where he stalked Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends, with Laurie being the sole survivor of his killing spree. Laurie was babysitting Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace when Michael showed up to kill her, and she did her best to make sure the kids could escape and be safe. Both kids showed up in other Halloween movies, but only Tommy had a bigger role in one of them.
Tommy Doyle was eight years old when Michael Myers returned to terrorize Haddonfield, and he was well aware of his legend as he was the one who warned Laurie about the Myers house and how it was a “spook house”. He was the one who spotted Michael outside his house and told Laurie the boogeyman was outside, which she dismissed – but he was obviously right, and in order to keep him and Lindsey safe, Laurie told them to run away to the Mackenzies’ house and ask for help. Young Tommy Doyle in Halloween was played by Brian Andrews, and he was seen again in Halloween II in footage from the first film, as it did a quick recap of its final moments so the audience could catch up.
Tommy returned in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, but his appearance is a bit confusing and tricky. This time, Tommy was played by Danny Ray, and as Rachel Carruthers’ (Ellie Cornell) friend Lindsey is known to be Lindsey Wallace from the first Halloween movie, it’s assumed that Danny Ray’s Tommy is Tommy Doyle. However, the character’s most prominent role in the franchise happened in the sixth movie, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Now played by Paul Rudd, 25-year-old Tommy was obsessed with Michael Myers and his crimes and was soon involved in yet another one of his murder sprees. Tommy theorized Michael’s obsession with killing his family members was due to the Curse of Thorn, and so he did his best to protect Jamie Lloyd’s baby, who was the latest in the Myers bloodline. Along with Dr. Loomis, he uncovered the Cult of Thorn and eventually beat Michael, escaping with Jamie’s baby and Kara and Danny Strode.
Halloween got the remake treatment in 2007 thanks to Rob Zombie, and the movie also included a young Tommy Doyle, this time played by Skyler Gisondo, and he had the same role as in the original movie. Last but not least, and now set in the reboot timeline, Tommy Doyle will return in Halloween Kills, played by Anthony Michael Hall, though what his role will be this time remains unknown.
