Everyone wants a new live-action Mario movie, according to a new survey.

The era of bad video game movie adaptations is officially dead. First, we had Detective Pikachu, which was a marvelous tour-de-force set in the world of Pokémon. Then, against all odds, Sonic the Hedgehog came in like a blue whirlwind and was an actually entertaining experience instead of the unmitigated dumpster fire we were all expecting.

Now, Hollywood is looking at other video game franchises to make movies out of. We’ve already got a Borderlands film officially in the works (although we’re still very concerned unless it receives a solid rewrite), and now we might be looking at a Super Mario movie too.

Everyone Wants A LiveAction Mario Movie (According To New Poll)

A new poll was conducted by The Hollywood Reporter that asked 2,200 American adults what video game they wanted to see turned into a live-action movie. The results put Mario at the top of the list with 44% of respondents in favor of a new live-action Mario film.

For those old enough to remember, Hollywood has tried turning Mario into a movie before. Super Mario Bros. was released in 1993 as the biggest box-office flop of that year, making back only half of its investment at the box office. The film was–and I say this from experience–bad. It basically took the plot of Mario and threw it in a wood chipper, then cast Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi.

As a result, nobody saw it, although the movie has gained a bit of a cult following in recent years as being the best example of a bad video game movie ever made.

It might surprise you to know that a Mario movie is actually already in the works with Illumination, the studio that brought us the Minions movies. It’ll be CG and not live-action, with a tentative release date of 2022.

Tied for second in the national poll was Pac Man and Mario Kart at 37%. Pac Man sounds boring, but a live-action Mario Kart movie would be fantastic. Basically a racing film with no explanation for the characters. We all know their stories anyway–just take is straight to the action.
