Everything Announced In Augusts Pokémon Presents

Since Nintendo first announced its new Pokémon titles Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus back in February, it’s remained unusually silent on its anniversary releases. Fans have been left to speculate on what Game Freak and ILCA have in store for the future of Pokémon but finally got a few nuggets of information with August’s Pokémon Presents.

The August Pokémon Presents consisted of a 28-minute live stream that revealed some truly exciting news, both on forthcoming updates for already released titles like Pokémon Unite and hotly anticipated upcoming releases like the Sinnoh remakes. Fans hoping for a big 25th-anniversary announcement may have been left wanting, but there is still plenty to look forward to that was announced. The future is bright for the franchise, and plenty is coming in the foreseeable future to keep fans engaged.

The event kicked off with a slew of updates for mobile titles. Pokémon Unite kicked things off by confirming a mobile release for September 22nd, with pre-registration currently open and cross-play supported across mobile and Nintendo Switch. The addition of Mamoswine and Sylveon was also teased, though fans will have to wait to learn more about how these creatures will play. They also announced that Pokémon Café Mix will be receiving a revamp with new puzzle elements, obtainable Pokémon and upgrades. Pokémon Masters EX will celebrate its 2nd anniversary with daily multi summons, legendary events, a new villain chapter of the story and the return of N. To wrap up the mobile announcements, Pokémon GO’s 5th birthday will be marked with the addition of the first Galarian Pokémon to the game.

The most anticipated section of the live stream was a brand new trailer for Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. The first thing that fans will notice is how much more polish is visible in this trailer; the lighting, in particular, is much improved from the game’s initial showing. The Sinnoh remakes are confirmed to include fan-favorite features such as Pokémon following you on the overworld and trainer customization to add fresh new elements to this return to the region. Contests also return in all their glory, and the Sinnoh Underground has received some new updates. The area appears to operate as it did in the original release but is also receiving new Pokémon Hideaways, side areas that contain rare and exclusive Pokémon. Which creatures spawn in the Hideaways can be manipulated by placing certain Pokémon statues within player’s Secret Bases.

While the trailer made no mention of Platinum’s Battle Frontier, it did show off Houndoom, a Pokémon added to the Sinnoh Pokédex in Platinum version, meaning there is still hope for some of the title’s improvements to make their way into the remakes. The trailer also confirmed the return of the Sinnoh region’s overworld hazards, such as deep snow and swamps. These two largely unnecessary roadblocks do nothing but slow progression excessively, and the inclusion of these elements makes the return of Sinnoh’s overbearing amount of HMs a more likely prospect. The Sinnoh remakes will also launch alongside a new Switch Lite design featuring Dialga and Palkia.

After a long period of silence, Legends: Arceus also received a new trailer, which looked far more polished than the original trailer. The ancient Sinnoh region has been dubbed the Hisui region, and players will work alongside the Galaxy Expedition Team in Jubilife Village to document and observe the many Pokémon that dot the landscape. Players will need to be cautious, as some wild Pokémon can attack them if they get too close. The reactions that Pokémon have to the player will reportedly differ by species.

As players fill out the original Pokédex, they will be given missions by members of the Galaxy Expedition Team that must be completed. When adventuring, players can come across camps where they can rest their party, purchase supplies and craft items using resources obtained within the world. Perhaps most excitingly, Legends will contain new regional forms and evolutions. Regional forms for Growlithe and Braviary were revealed, as well as evolutions for both Stantler and Basculin.

Pokémon can be ridden as players traverse fields and oceans and can even be used to fly through the skies of the Hisui region. Many wild Pokémon can be captured without a battle if the player is clever, but battles can be initiated by throwing a Poké Ball near a wild creature if the player desires. Moves are now able to be utilized in two Styles: Strong Style and Agile Style. Moves used in the Strong Style are more powerful but cause the Pokémon to move slower, and the Agile Style acts inversely. Battles in Legends seem to feature a tweaked version of the traditional battle system, with the possibility for Pokémon to make multiple moves in a row if they are fast enough.

Finally, Pokémon HOME support was confirmed for both Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus. However, the competitive battle scene will still call Sword & Shield home, with online competitions set to continue for the foreseeable future. Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl will feature online multiplayer through its Union Rooms, but not in a competitive capacity.

August’s Pokémon Presents was an impressive showing from the brand that did much more to ingratiate fans to its upcoming releases than the initial reveals. The ultimate status of Platinum content within the Sinnoh remakes is still unclear, and the lack of any announcements regarding anniversary re-releases is rather disappointing, but what was shown of these new titles is sure to make fans excited. Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are set to launch on 19th November 2021, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus will release on 28th January 2022.
